2024 Usability Study Project Proposal - form for clients
In HCDE 517, students participate in a quarter-long project that requires them to identify a product or service that could benefit from a usability analysis and test.

BENEFITS TO YOU: Under expert mentorship, the students will engage in product and user research, formulate an appropriate usability study, design and execute that study, and analyze and report on their finding. Students generally complete an initial study proposal, an interaction or experience map, a study plan, a study kit, and a final report and presentation.

WHAT WE ASK FROM YOU: Project teams will require direct access to potential users and the systems they will evaluate. Sponsors should be available for an introductory meeting the 2nd or 3rd week of January, answer occasional questions during the quarter, and review a final report or presentation at the end of quarter (early/mid-March). Some sponsors also provide access to unique test environments, hard-to-reach user groups, or other resources. There is no donation or fee associated with this collaboration.

To help you scope a project, you can review an example syllabus: https://www.smunson.com/teaching/hcde517/w23/

If you have multiple, distinct products, please fill this out for each. If you are seeking to work with multiple student groups on a competitive analysis (e.g., one group per competitor) or focused on multiple user groups, you can fill this out once and note how you anticipate the work could be allocated among multiple teams.

THANK YOU!

Company/Organization Name
Your Name *

A description of your project *
Please keep in mind that students are not full time employees who can keep up with a constantly changing system and must stay on schedule to complete their project in the nine weeks. Student teams need this product to be stable from January through mid-March.

What is the status of your project?
*
The system(s) or prototypes must be ready to evaluate by early January or this will delay student teams. For prototypes, students typically conduct task-based usability evaluations and so prototypes must be sufficiently built out to support this method.
Target user group(s)
To achieve the learning goals of this course, student teams will work directly with target users, typically in moderated user studies.
What support can you provide for teams?
These are not required, but helps teams anticipate what they will need to do.
Are there other forms of support or additional resources you can provide to the students?
From whom did you hear about this opportunity  ?
If you heard from an instructor, please name them so that we make them your primary contact
What is the maximum number of teams you would like to work with on this project? *
We sometimes offer some projects to multiple student teams. This allows you to get more perspectives on the project, but it also means more work for you to support and engage with teach team.

We cannot guarantee teams' availability will align, so if you plan to work with multiple teams, please be aware that this may mean separate meetings with each team.
Does your project require a non-disclosure agreement? *
Non-disclosure agreements can decrease the chances that students will select your project, as students are looking for both (a) a strong learning experience and (b) something they can use in their portfolio.
You will hear back by the end of the 3rd week of January 2024 if your project has been selected by a student group.
