Please use this form to apply to become a Student Guide in the Pilot Scheme that is running in Semester 1 of the 2019/20 academic year at Heriot-Watt's Scottish Borders Campus.

To be eligible to become a Student Guide in this pilot programme, you must meet the following criteria:
• You must be a student who will be going into Year 3 or above of your programme in the 2019/20 academic year.
• You must be a student within the School of Textiles.
• You must be in good academic standing (i.e. no resit examinations in August 2019). If you have resits this year, we would prefer that you focus on them rather than taking on additional responsibilities.

WHAT IS A STUDENT GUIDE?
As a Student Guide (SG), you will be in Year 3 or above of your programme and will be responsible for facilitating the learning of students who are new to the University, and entering directly into Years 2 or 3. You will act as an additional level of support, alongside what the University already offers. As a current student, you will be able to provide advice and support based on your first-hand experience with a particular course or programme. You should be proud to be a Heriot-Watt student and keen to help other people. While you don’t necessarily need to be a “top student,” you should have a good understanding of the fundamental topics within your subject area. SGs should have a strong desire to develop their personal and professional skills through extra-curricular activities.

HOW THE PILOT WILL RUN IN YOUR SCHOOL
Within TEX in Semester 1 of the 2019/20 academic year, the Student Guide Programme pilot will run in all 6 subjects; Fashion Marketing & Retailing, Fashion Design, Fashion Technology, Design for Textiles, Fashion Communication and Interior Design. In TEX, the programme will run as an opt-out scheme, meaning it will be available to all new students entering directly into Years 2 or 3 in the 2019/20 academic year.

THE ROLE OF STUDENT GUIDE
An SG will lead a study group of up to 8 Student Learners (SLs). SLs are new direct entry students in the School of Textiles who will be new to the University in the 2019/20 academic year. SGs will use their own knowledge and experience to facilitate the learning of their SLs through frequent Study Group sessions. Whilst the primary aim is to provide academic support, SGs will also be able to provide social support - especially to students who have just joined the University.
