Rise & Shine Parent Leadership Program Application
This application is a chance for us to get to know you and why you are interested in joining the Rise & Shine Leadership Program. If possible, please take a few moments to answer the questions below. Rise & Shine is open to parents who have had personal experience with the child welfare system through NYC Administration for Children Services (ACS). This includes preventive services, court-ordered supervision and foster care.

*** To be eligible to participate in the Rise & Shine program, your child welfare case must be closed and you must live in NYC. Please note that Rise & Shine is not a job training or placement program.

Rise & Shine is an 18-week foundational program that prepares parents impacted by ACS to become powerful leaders in the movement for family justice. We focus on healing, creating conditions for mutual trust and peer support and building parents' knowledge, power and skills to create safe and strong communities.

Writing Workshop
In our writing workshop, participants are required to write personal story or essay related to their child welfare experience and/or vision for change. Participants can choose what to focus on in writing their story or essay. Parents will also do creative writing activities, including poetry writing. Your writing may be published in the Rise newsletter and on the Rise website and social media platforms.

Public Speaking
In our public speaking workshop, participants will use their personal stories and experience to create a speech that will be shared with the public (parents, community members and leaders, child welfare leaders and advocates

Knowledge Building
The program will offer information about child welfare history, policy and practice. It will also cover topics related to justice. As a parent, this will help you lift your voice through leadership and advocate for strengthening our communities.

Rise & Shine Program Logistics
In 2024, we anticipate that Rise & Shine will take place primarily in person, with some of the knowledge-building classes/workshops taking place online via Zoom. Laptops will be available for use in the Rise office (Rise will not provide personal laptops during your participation in the program)

We will also discuss it during our open houses and interviews.
The program will run 3 days each week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) for 3 hours (10 a.m. - 1p.m. for 18 weeks (February - June 2024).
