Successful leaders are accomplished public speakers; our speech classes teach students how to select, research, write, and deliver presentations using proven skills for success. While some of our students chose to compete in speech competitions, all of our students learn how to speak before a classroom in a relaxed and polished manner, increasing their self-confidence.
Our Director of Speech Curriculum, Bob Carroll, has 25 years of experience in forensics education, directed summer speech institutes for Bradley University and Blue Ribbon Forensics, and coached competitive public speaking and debating for Homewood-Flossmoor and Munster high schools.
The speech classes we offer this year as part of our camp experience are:
Oratory for Middle School Students (grades 6th - 8th):
students learn how to write and deliver an informative speech on a topic of their choice. The instructor for this class is Matthew Beifuss.
Oratory for Elementary Students (grades 3rd - 5th):
students learn how to write and deliver a demonstration speech on a skill of their choice. The instructor for this class is Matthew Beifuss.
Extemporaneous Speaking for Middle School Students (grades 6th -8th):
students learn how to deliver short speeches answering questions about national and international events. The instructor for this class is Brian Zhang, a senior at Naperville North HS, who is the 2019 NCFL national champion and the 2019 and 2018 Illinois state champion in extemp speaking.
Extemporaneous Speaking for Elementary Students (grades 3rd - 5th):
students learn basic, but important, public speaking skills by learning how to deliver oral answers to questions about school, hobbies, family, and community. The instructor for this class is Matthew Beifuss.
