Female Personal Assistant - Flexible bank hours
We are currently welcoming applications for Personal Assistants (PAs) to join our team, on flexible zero contracts.

You will be directly employed by a young professional disabled woman, that works for a large environmental charity in a demanding yet rewarding role which includes travel across the UK and occasionally Europe.

The role is best suited to friendly, respectful and open-minded individuals, who are extremely reliable and have the excellent communication skills required to provide attentive yet unobtrusive assistance.

Applications are encouraged from people with and without prior Personal Assistant/care experience as this job is guaranteed to be unlike most traditional care work roles.

About the role
Job Type: A flexible zero hours contract with shifts agreed in advance to fit with your own schedule.  The shifts are worked in blocks of 24 to 84 hours where you will be based at my home as well as travelling with me for work and leisure. You will be able to sleep at night when on duty but may be called upon if required.

Rate of pay: £265 per 24 hours

Role description
Main Duties

The following lists give you an idea as to the assistance to be provided but they are not exhaustive or is every task continually required. Daily tasks will be learnt and familiarised through the PA and I working together.  You do not require previous experience as I am the best-qualified person to know what my needs are and how they can best be met, and to provide full training. Most areas of PA work can be learned by working together. Training will also be provided by senior staff members.

Personal Assistance:
  • Assistance with transfers into and out of my wheelchair
  • Assistance with taking medication and physiotherapy
  • Assist me with washing, dressing and grooming
  • Helping me manage my posture and spasms
  • Able to assist with the above tasks during the night, as needed. You will be able to sleep at night.
  • Assist with socialising, exercising, meetings, hospital and doctor appointments
  • Assist with administration tasks including undertaking some alone
  • Assist with planning and organising
  • Assist me to use all types of public transport
  • To provide discreet assistance and not develop personal relationships with my friends, family or colleagues
  • Any reasonable request to facilitate my independence
Domestic Tasks:
  • Preparing food and drink, including vegan meals 
  • Assistance with shopping
  • Assistance with moving and charging my wheelchair and other equipment
  • Housework and light DIY (such as changing light bulbs, assembling flat-pack with instruction etc)
  • Assist with gardening, watering plants etc
Workplace Tasks:
  • Notetaking including on flipchart at the front of events
  • Understand that you are also representing my workplace when in view of the public and to not comment on our work
  • Long days in a fast-moving environment with young people and politicians, alongside quiet days supporting me to work at home
  • Frequent fully paid for travel across the UK and Europe
The type of person that will thrive in this role 
You are flexible in your approach to work. You will be able to sensitively provide personal care. You are happy to spend a significant time alone, waiting for your employer to request your assistance alongside long busy days on your feet at big, busy events using plenty of initiative. You can provide attentive yet unobtrusive assistance. You have a good working memory and attention to detail that you can apply to tasks ranging from making meals and cleaning to research and administrative work. You will be able to blend into the background of your employer's life proud to be working in a role that affords disabled people the same autonomy and privacy non-disabled people experience every day. Supporting someone with a health condition and life that is anything but routine, you enjoy variety in your job. You are someone that is comfortable assisting at large fast-paced professional events and small gatherings of friends in your employers home. You can stay calm, follow instructions and remember routines but are also able to quickly learn new tasks. You are friendly and have a non-judgemental attitude.
Person Specification
Essential criteria
  1. Ability to provide discreet, unobtrusive assistance working to a routine, following instruction and using your own initiative
  2. Non-judgmental about all aspects of my lifestyle; whether it’s dull and boring, exotic and wild or anything in between
  3. Ability to assist with personal care without embarrassment
  4. Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect my and my friends and families privacy
  5. Able to spend a large amount of time in the background, on your own
  6. Able to be patient, professional and remain calm under pressure even when tired
  7. Experience and confidence in preparing main meals and carrying out household tasks
  8. GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths or proven ability to take notes and undertake admin involving maths
  9. Confident working with IT and using a smartphone e.g. Word, Excel, google docs, google maps etc
  10. Have good general health. You do not need to be physically strong but it is a physically demanding role at times.                                                                                                                                                       
  11. Comfortable working in settings with LGBTQ, anti-racist and environmental activism
  12. Non-smoker
  13. Comfortable around cats and dogs (I have a cat and my partner, who I do not live with, has a well trained dog)
  14. Be willing to be undertake all COVID-19 precautions including use of PPE at work and any vaccines required
Desirable criteria
  1. Experience of working in an environment that the pace changed from quiet to busy quickly
  2. Experience of living with flatmates or shared housing
  3. Experience of working long, multiple and/or evening shifts e.g. in a bar, hotel, au-pair, youth-work, as a PA
  4. Knowledge of/or able to learn the basics of the Social Model of Disability
  5. Clean driving license and access to a car
  6. Able to assist me when swimming
  7. Experience of note-taking in lectures or conferences
