Who is John Wooden?
I find it interesting and very telling that when all these people talked about the most successful basketball coach in history, none of them talked about how much he knew about basketball.  Why do you think John cared more about the principles of life than just winning basketball games?
Introduction to "The Pyramid of Success" and his definition of success, which is "Peace of mind attained only through self satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do the best of which you are capable."  You are the only that knows that, and this defines your character.
The Pyramid of Success.  At the top you get to experience competitive greatness.
Row 1: the Foundation, these are the skills you need in order to even start going after competitive greatness.
It's easy to see why hard work and enthusiasm are here, but why would Friendship, Loyalty and Cooperation be fundamental building blocks to winning national championships?
Which of the blocks in row 1 do you think you're developing well with and which blocks do you need to get better with?
Row 2: Higher Level. The first row had to do with how you bring yourself to others (bringing your work ethic and enthusiasm to your team).  The second row has to do with mental skills like paying attention and decision making.
Why are mental skills and "how you think" important in sports?
Which of the blocks in row 2 do you think you're developing well with and which blocks do you need to get better with?
Row 3: Learning the Craft.  With the foundation of character and intent, you go about being a student of your sport, like you are doing now.
In row 3 we see training aspects like conditioning and skills that develop your "talent," why would "Team Spirit" be in this row?
Which of the blocks in row 3 do you think you're developing well with and which blocks do you need to get better with?
Row 4, How you handle your "talent" (that you developed one row down).
Why is how you handle your talents important to competitive greatness?
Which of the blocks in row 4 do you think you're developing well with and which blocks do you need to get better with?
The Top of the Pyramid, Perform at your best WHEN YOUR BEST IS REQUIRED.  And your best is required each day.
Here Coach speaks about being able to perform when needed, not just when you're in the mood or the stars align.  And then he says your best is required each day.  What do you think "Competitive Greatness" means?
Coach himself talking about the difference between winning and succeeding.
Coach says it's ok that not everyone should get an A or a B, as it says you are above average in the class, but the parents all wanted their kids to be "above average."   What's the difference between everyone being able to learn the material given, and being "above average"?  Does just being able to learn material or skills make us "special"?
To Coach Wooden, success is not the attainment of material possessions, power or prestige.  He also says that success isn't about being better than others, and yet his team was so much better than .  If success isn't about being better than other people, then what is success about?
What does control have to do with it?
The poem he recites at 4:05, what's the teaching of this poem?  How does this frame how you show up as a leader?
What does he say about school, athletics and social activities and how to balance them for success?
What are Coach Wooden's 3 rules?
Working hard and enjoying what you're doing lead to success, but what does patience have to do with it?
Is all change progress?  Why or why not?
"We hope things will turn out the way we want them to but them we don't do the things that are necessary to make those things become a reality."  What's the missing link here that can turn our hopes into reality?
The Moriarty poem called "The road ahead or the road behind," starts with the following verse "Sometimes I think the Fates must grin as we denounce them and insist the only reason we can't win, is the Fates themselves have missed."  What does this mean?
What does it mean, "The shining trophies on our shelves can never win tomorrow's game"?
My favorite part of this poem is when he says, "Yet losing, not afraid to fall, if, bravely, we have given all."  Why do you think that is?
"Don't whine, don't complain, don't make excuses."

"If you make an effort to do the best you can regularly, the results will be about what they should be, not necessarily what you'd want them to be."

Two players gave Coach the most satisfaction.  What was it about these guys  that he found satisfying as a coach?
