This is an introductory course on antibacterial chemotherapy and resistance. It is designed for individuals with limited experience who may work in a clinical environment or in the diagnostic or pharmaceutical industry, but will also be beneficial for experienced individuals seeking a refresher course.

The class begins with basic concepts of antibacterial therapy, pharmacodynamics, and susceptibility testing. More advanced concepts include detailed descriptions of mechanisms of antibacterial activity of some drugs (mainly cell wall active drugs) and the development of resistance to them. Special emphasis is given to the challenge of accurate detection of resistance. Lectures are complemented by an interactive phenotypic and molecular laboratory session.
