What is Girls Rock! DC?
Girls Rock! DC works at the intersection of art and activism, providing music programs for young people to learn, grow, and rock out together. We foster a supportive, inclusive, and equitable space that centers girls and non-binary youth, especially Black and Brown youth. Our unique approach to music education -- through a social justice and equity lens -- has allowed DC's young folks to explore their passion for social change through our after-school programs, camps, and workshops. Who are we looking for?
We are seeking Board Members that are dedicated to the Girls Rock! DC mission, share our values, reflect our diverse community, and have time and resources to be an ambassador for and steward of the organization.

We are especially seeking Board Members who reflect the diversity of the young people we serve and the wider DC community. This includes youth; women; non-binary and trans folks; Black, Indigenous, People of Color; community members from across all eight wards; strong community leaders; those within the DC artist and musician community; former campers or volunteers; parents of campers. We strongly encourage folks who have skill sets in fundraising, finance, nonprofit management, and/or community development to apply.
What does it mean to be a Girls Rock! DC Board Member?

Girls Rock! DC Board members are responsible for overseeing Girls Rock! DC’s operations, and maintaining our commitment to its mission. This involves establishing our strategic direction, ensuring our compliance with all applicable legal requirements, and keeping our organization financially healthy.

Board members are ambassadors of GR!DC (spreading the word about programs, contributing to fundraising and outreach efforts, and building relationships on behalf of the organization) and stewards of the organization (providing guidance and oversight on annual strategic and financial planning).

Board members don't have to come in with any special skills: we provide professional development support to members with internal and external trainings on things like financial oversight, nonprofit governance, and fundraising. That 'ambassador' role is crucial, and we especially help board members build skills and stretch out of their comfort zone when it comes to things like outreach, fundraising, and relationship-building.

Our board is a governance board rather than a working board because the staff run the day-to-day operations of the organization. Board members are expected to contribute a minimum of 4 hours per week to support the organization, which can include attending meetings (every other week 1-hour zoom meetings through Jan 2024, every other month 2-hour zoom meetings, and two half-day retreats per year), helping out with events, supporting fundraising and outreach, or volunteering with programs. Terms are two years, with a three-term maximum.
