2023 "JAPAN IN DC" Student Application
Globalize DC is now accepting applications for this summer's JAPAN IN DC program for DC public high school students. If you have a passion for Japan, or enjoy exploring the city, or want to participate in a new book project (or all three), this could be the program for you! We will review applications as we receive them, so please fill out the online application form below as soon as possible to avoid being left out.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Students in the 2023 JAPAN IN DC summer program will explore and get to know a wide variety of people, places, organizations, businesses, government agencies, and cultural institutions with connections to Japan. It will be a lot of fun, with real-life experiences and exposure to the Japanese world and Japan-related careers in Washington, DC. This summer we will have a special focus on the Japanese American incarceration, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, US-Japan relations, and other World War II-related themes. Writers, photographers, artists, videographers, and poets are particularly encouraged to apply. We will identify a meeting site that is metro accessible, and will use public transportation to move around the city during the program.

You can learn more about Globalize DC's Japan programs, including Japan in DC, at www.japaneseplus.org.

DATES: June 26 - August 4, 2023 (Monday-Friday, 9 am-2:30 pm)

LOCATION: Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC) will serve as our home base, but we will travel around the city most days. Please note: This summer program does NOT include travel to Japan.

ELIGIBILITY: The program will be open to DC public high school students. Up to twenty (20) students will be selected this year. Applicants must be current 9th, 10th, or 11th graders in either a DCPS or DC charter high school, and no older than 18 years of age.

COST: The program will be offered at no cost, although students will be responsible for most of their own lunches. Those registered with MBSYEP will receive summer pay.

SUMMER PAY THROUGH MBSYEP: To be eligible for summer pay, students must be registered with the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP). The deadline for MBSYEP registration is February 28, 2023. We encourage any interested student to complete the MBSYEP registration before this deadline, even if you aren't already accepted into our program. Here's the MBSYEP registration link: https://summerjobs.dc.gov/

Students not registered with MBSYEP will be allowed to participate, but will not be paid. ALL students (including those in MBSYEP) must apply and be accepted through this JAPAN IN DC application process.
