Peer Mentors are invaluable student leaders in The A Center! Their ultimate role is to provide support for undeclared/undecided students in The A Center transitioning to college. Peer Mentors have the opportunity to develop interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. In addition, this role gives Peer Mentors the opportunity to become more engaged with The A Center and build community for A Center students.
Objectives for Peer Mentors:
- To assist The A Center in helping first-year students transition to the University
- To understand common challenges that college students face, especially in the first year and during transitional periods
- To build familiarity of campus resources at the University and refer students to appropriate resources
- To serve in a leadership role in the TLS100 new student seminar for first-year A Center students
- To develop skills in active listening, empathy, communication, public speaking, leadership, and professionalism
- To collaborate with other Peer Mentors, A Center staff, A Center students, and other student leaders in The A Center
- To create community-building opportunities for A Center students
Time Commitment
Peer Mentors will be enrolled in 1 unit of TLS393, the internship course associated with the role, which will be graded pass/fail. The time commitment for the internship course will be 45 hours throughout the semester, which equates to about 3 hours per week. Peer Mentors must be available for biweekly meetings with the peer mentor team on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:00pm throughout the Fall 2025 semester. Peer Mentors must also be available to attend and assist with one TLS100 class each week.
Requirements:
- At least a 2.0 GPA
- At least a 2nd year student in Fall 2025 -- preference for students who have been undeclared
- Available for biweekly meetings on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:00pm in Fall 2025
- Ability to enroll in 1 unit of TLS393, the internship course for Peer Mentors, in Fall 2025
- Empathy and desire to support students in The A Center!
