***JOB DESCRIPTION BELOW***

TEACHING ARTIST
Quinteto Latino is a wind chamber ensemble and an advocacy organization whose mission is to disrupt racial and economic disparities within the classical music field by championing past, present, and future contributions by Latino composers and musicians. As leaders for culturally competent music education, we bring music education experiences that encourage children of color to express themselves musically and to create music that is authentic to their lived experience. Teaching Artists play an integral role in bringing these experiences to life.

Our Teaching Artists support music instruction in predominantly Latino enrolled schools and after school programs in East Palo Alto, East Menlo Park, and the unincorporated North Fair Oaks neighborhood in San Mateo County (Redwood City).

What you’ll do:
As a Quinteto Latino Teaching Artist, you participate in a teaching residency with a specific school, after-school program, or community based organization and teach students the fundamentals of music (with and without instruments) in preparation for a live performance. You also lead classes in reflection after the performance.
Teaching residencies vary in length and grade-level, but typically span 1-10 weeks and serve grades K-8. Classes are usually taught Monday - Friday during the school day or after school. As a Teaching Artist, you will:
Receive overview training in Quinteto Latino's philosophy and approach to classroom instruction. (QL lesson plans are available to you for reference.)
  • Engage your class with age and grade-level appropriate facilitation.
  • Coordinate with Quinteto Latino staff to determine residency schedule in a timely manner.
  • Arrive to your school/community site on-time.
  • Represent Quinteto Latino’s values.
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with students, teachers, and school administrators.
  • Travel independently to schools and community sites in the mid-peninsula region. If traveling by car, must have appropriate auto insurance coverage, and a valid California Driver’s license.
  • [If applicable] Brass coaching at the middle school level.
What you need:
  • 3+ years as a musician
  • 3+ years experience working and/or volunteering with children in grades K-8
  • 2+ years experience teaching children in grades K-8
  • Ability to travel to different school sites in the mid-peninsula region and arrive on time
  • Required documents: DOJ Fingerprint Screening, Negative Tuberculosis Test, up to date Covid Vaccination Record.
What you’ll get:
  • Receive coaching from Quinteto Latino’s Lead Teaching Artist Armando Castellano to develop lesson plans, create themes for residency, classrooms management, etc.
  • Training in Quinteto Latino’s curriculum and philosophies of culturally competent music education.
  • Ongoing support and troubleshooting from Quinteto Latino artistic and program staff.
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community while sharing your love and appreciation for classical music.
Compensation:
