Theme 1: REPRESENTING THE SELF VIA ART *

MOLLY: Versions of a cartoon-like character that is used to represent me doing everyday things.

MOLLY: A reflection of myself and how I was feeling about planning for my transition from living at home to living near university

YASHASVI: Adult Diversion--Holding on to Things I Love in this Sometimes Chaotic World.

WEIYI: It is a moment captured by my friend when I was looking at a collection of an artist’s work at a Café which was holding an exhibition named “To the Nature”. I think it is a great representation of me, an introvert who enjoys spending time herself in a random afternoon during the summer.

WEIYI: It is always easy for us to be trapped in the past and not able to move on and look forward. Inspired by these blooming flowers, I created this piece of artwork to reflect on my inner struggles at the time, hoping to “break free” from the past that kept haunting me (which is represented by the black and lifeless vase) just like these lively flowers did. Even for now, this artwork can always be a good reminder that we can break free from anything that trapped us and live a life much more freely and joyfully.

Theme 2: APPRECIATE DETAIL VIA ART *

ZEENA: This artwork helped me appreciate the detail in the Bangor marina, I had visited a few days prior. In between writing my thesis, I took a day trip with friends and visited Bangor in Northern Ireland. During the scribble art (one-line) session of the ARTSMH UCL programme, I decided to draw the marina from a picture on my phone. Despite the art not having detail in as of itself, I was able to focus and admire the little bits contributing to making the whole scene so beautiful; the green moss in the water, pedestrians strolling, resting boats, etc.

ZEENA: This artwork helped me escape from daily busyness; it was a project I did for fun. The collage elements are from magazines lying about in the house- bits and pieces of everyday life around us. This piece is a sequel to another being the opposite (filled violins, empty background), inspired from the detailed, cartoony art of my Middle School Art teacher long ago. The purpose of this artwork was giving me enjoyment through creation and appreciation to detail. It is dedicated to my mom, who always reminds me not to forget enjoying life and to not sweat the small stuff.

WEIYI: After a long day, it is nothing more calming to catch the sunset view outside of my window. Originally, I simply wanted to paint the architecture in the sunset, but inspired by an artist, I combined two views at different moments in one piece when I found the architecture accidentally looks like a giant zipper. At the end of day, I hope we could “unzip” the emotion package within us, vent some of the negative feelings out and start appreciating small things we often ignore in our life.
