AHA Reading & Writing Group Directory Survey
There is clear demand amongst early career (ECR) members of the Australian Historical Association (AHA) for greater opportunities for cohort-building and networking that are more closely aligned to fields of research. To facilitate this, the AHA’s ECR representatives are compiling a Reading & Writing Group Directory. Once finalised, the directory will list field-specific reading and writing groups and provide contact details for anyone wishing to join an existing group. The Directory will be listed on a member-only section of the AHA’s website.

For the purposes of the directory, a reading group is defined as a group organised to read and discuss published works in a field. A writing group is defined as a group organised to read, discuss, and provide feedback on works-in-progress produced by the members of the group. A 'shut up and write' group is a group organised to make writing a more social activity, with members meeting to write together (often using the Pomodoro Method) and discuss their writing goals and progress.

Our intention is to list any form of reading or writing group relevant to the AHA’s members (keeping in mind that the Association aims to represent historians working in any field in Australia, so relevance is not limited to Australian history) and which are open to new members joining. These groups may meet either in person or online. While our focus is on facilitating opportunities for ECRs to connect with colleagues with similar research interests, we aim to provide a resource for all members. HDR students, early and mid career researchers, independent historians, and established researchers are all encouraged to contribute to the compilation of the directory.

As the first step in compiling the AHA Reading and Writing Group Directory, we are seeking information about groups that are currently in existence and about new groups that members might be interested in establishing. Once this survey closes, we will identify fields that have enough interest to support new reading and/or writing groups and will put interested participants in contact with one another. Once interested participants have been introduced to one another, the ECR reps will step back and allow the groups to self-organise.

Please note that, to participate in any group listed on the directory, members will need to familiarise themselves with and accept the AHA’s Code of Ethics.

To help us in compiling the directory, please provide as much detail as you can and share this survey as widely as possible.

Section 1: This first section is about groups that you are already involved with. If you are not currently involved in any groups but want to register your interest, please skip to Section 2.

Are you currently involved in any field-specific reading groups that are open to new members? These are groups dedicated to discussing published work in a particular field (EG, 'environmental history' or 'oral history').

Please provide details about the group’s field of interest, when you meet, and where you meet (including whether you meet online or in-person somewhere). Provide as much detail as you can about the group.
How can new members get involved in your reading group? Please provide the name and email address (or an alternative form of contact) for a contact person who interested members can get in touch with (you must obtain permission from anyone other than yourself whose contact details you wish to provide us with). These details will be included in the directory on a member-only page of the AHA's website.

You must obtain permission from anyone other than yourself whose contact details you wish to provide us with. You may request your details be removed from the directory at any point.
Are you currently involved in any shut up and write groups (or groups with a similar format)? These are groups dedicated to meeting up to write in an inclusive, social, and mutually supportive group.

Please provide details about the group’s field of interest, when you meet, and where you meet (including whether you meet online or in-person somewhere). Provide as much detail as you can about the group.
How can new members get involved in your shut up and write group? Please provide the name and email address (or an alternative form of contact) for a contact person who interested members can get in touch with.

You must obtain permission from anyone other than yourself whose contact details you wish to provide us with. You may request your details be removed from the directory at any point.
Section 2: This second section is about new groups you would be interested in joining. This is an opportunity to suggest any groups you would be interested in joining or would be willing to set up.

Are there any fields of research that you would be interested in joining a reading group for? (EG, 'migration history', 'urban history', or 'biography'). This would be a group dedicated to discussing published work in the field. List as many fields of interest as you like.
Are there any fields of research that you would be interested in joining a writing group for? (EG, 'global history', 'legal history', or 'intellectual history') This would be a group dedicated to discussing works-in-progress broadly related to the theme of the group. List as many fields of interest as you like.
Are there any particular types of shut up and write group you would be interested in joining or creating? (EG, for people working in a particular field such as Australian history, an in-person group based in a particular city, an online group for PhD students, etc.)
Section 3: This final section is to collect your name and contact details to ensure we can contact you to put you in touch with colleagues with similar interests, either to join an existing group or collectively establish a new one. Your information will only be used to introduce you to colleagues with similar interests. Your details will not be posted on the new directory page of the AHA website unless you listed yourself as a contact person for an existing group in Section 1.
