2. Present Day Great Britain. The King or Queen now has extensive theoretical powers, but his or her role is mainly ceremonial. The country is governed by Parliament and led by the Prime Minister. These members are voted into office by the public. However, the King or Queen is an integral part of Parliament and gives Parliament the power to meet and create legislation. An Act of Parliament does not become a law until it has been signed by the Queen (although no monarch has refused to sign an Act of Parliament in over 300 years). *
