Maps - Conventional Signs or Map Symbols
Most maps use symbols to represent common objects.  For example a black square represents a building.  These are are called "Map Symbols" or "Conventional Signs" and can be found in the on the back or in the margins of the map.  Knowing the conventional ones will help you more quickly understand the information presented by the map.

Below are examples of some of the Conventional Signs found on Canadian topographic maps.  Take a look at them then answer the questions at the end.
