Thanks for taking the time to fill out an application to volunteer for Girls Talk Math at the University of Maryland (UMD). This a program that promotes high schoolers interested in mathematics by providing introductory college-level math lessons and affirming representation of underrepresented genders in math. In 2023 we will host an in-person camp for two weeks,
June 20-30, 2023 from 9am-4pm at the Mathematics Department of UMD - College Park.
Some of these positions include some compensation for summer workers!
During the program, attendees will be learning about a specific area of interest (such as scientific computing, networks, knot theory, surface classification, or cryptography) by working on a packet in small groups. These packets are designed to be fairly self-guided with an undergraduate/graduate student mentor assigned for each topic so that the girls can have some guidance if needed. While they work on their math packet, they will also research and publish a podcast about a famous mathematician from an underrepresented gender in math with research related to their program studies. We will need many volunteers to participate as mentors during the camp.
Prior to camp we will have curriculum development to review and revamp current packets that were made for virtual learning.
