Youth Leaders provide peer support for campers and help set a welcoming, non-judgmental, and supportive tone for camp. Youth Leaders support all camp programming and often assist or lead specific workshops and activities. Youth Leaders also support Mentors and camp staff in maintaining the camp schedule and the smooth running of camp. Youth Leaders have the opportunity to build leadership skills, enhance listening skills, learn how to facilitate discussions and how to build and maintain safe space and support their peers.

Youth Leaders:
• are between the age of 18-24;
• are role models and mentors;
• enhance the camp experience;
• create a safe space for peer-to-peer education;
• are approachable with sensitive topics

General Duties:
• Report to Camp Directors, coordinators, and Mentors;
• Provide peer support to youth and mentor participants to build leadership skills and personal resiliency strategies;
• Create spaces for informal peer-to-peer education and role modelling;
• Support peer mentor-ship opportunities;
• Youth Leaders may be seen as more approachable around sensitive topics, or in some situations youth participants may be more receptive to learning about these topics from peers

Before Camp:
• Participate in orientation and training sessions, workshops, and meetings, as scheduled;
• Assist in the planning, promoting, and implementation of camp programs and related activities.

During Camp:
• Participate in the creation of a safe, healthy, and inclusive living and learning environment at Camp Eclipse. Youth Leaders are the most immediate link with the Camp Eclipse team, as such they are a vital resource to participants in each assigned room;
• Work to establish good communication and rapport with all participants, especially youth participants;
• Be a positive and responsible role model, in words, actions, and deeds, for all youth participants;
• Become knowledgeable of, and support, all Camp Eclipse related policies and procedures;
• Know the content and be prepared to explain the intent and reasons for Camp Eclipse and Environmental Education Centre policies to participants, and if necessary obtain clarification from the Camp Director;
• Encourage participants, through words, actions, and deeds, to participate as fully as possible in all parts of Camp Eclipse, including attending workshop sessions and other camp-related programming and activities;
• Support campers in respecting the physical and environmental space, including in tidying up as needed;
• Be aware of participants’ whereabouts, activities, behaviours, and interactions;
• Support and guide camp participants in behaving respectfully and supportively towards themselves and each other
• Support participants through the daily camp schedule, so that they are on time and prepared;
• Suppoer participants' physical, emotional, and social needs, ensuring that all participants are able to participate as fully as possible;
• Actively support youth and adults who have diverse abilities and/or cultural, economic, ethical, gender, national, racial, religious, political and/or sexual identities.

We typically meet at a location in St. John's, NL to take a bus all together to Camp. Please let us know if transportation to/from the meeting and drop-off location in St. John's would be a barrier for your attendance. We try to accommodate any needs for transportation to help people attend!
