Cultivate Charlottesville Food Justice Network, Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, and Maupintown Media are hosting a community roundtable introducing
The Power to Grow: A History of Booker T. Washington Park and the Intersection of Food JusticeJoin us on Tuesday, August 15 from 5:00pm - 7:30pm at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center
Looking Back to Grow Forward: Charlottesville's Booker T.
Washington Park has a legacy as a
thriving hub of the AfricanAmerican community.
For decades, Black Charlottesville
residents played a key role in
transforming the land from a history
of injustice to a history of
reclamation.
In 1944, for example, the park hosted
a Victory Garden Exhibit showcasing
over 200 displays of flowers,
vegetables, fruits, and canned
goods created by Black gardeners
and farmers. Let’ s come together to build an
urban farm, bring back land lost,
and move food justice forward!
Join us for this special night of history and remembrance, vision and growing.
