Best of the West: Student Participant Nominations
As per tradition, commitment to vision, and rising demand for available spots for high school student participants, HS Band Directors should nominate (register) their students based on who would:
  1. best represent your school (ie. are they willing to practice audition placement music before arriving at CMU?
  2. benefit from this experience (access to nationally renowned guest artists and conductors, working with CMU faculty, rehearsing and performing in a great select band experience, etc.)
  3. make a positive contribution to the festival (both musically and behaviorally) 

The festival will accept a total of 280 nominations.  Early submission is highly recommended, but are due by 5pm on November 15.  Directors may nominate the following number of students based on the total number of students in their band program, grades 9–12.  
  • Band programs with 20 or fewer students may nominate up to 10 students.
  • Band programs with 21–50 students may nominate up to 12 students
  • Band programs with 51–75 students may nominate up to 15 students.  
  • Band programs with 76–100 students may nominate up to 20 students.
  • Band programs with 101 or more students may nominate up to 25 students.
There are a few notable exceptions to above nomination limitations:
  • There is no limit on the number of oboes, bassoons and horns a director may nominate (oboes, bassoons and horns do not count towards a director's limit).
  • There is a limit of 3 saxophonists per school (2 altos + 1 tenor or 1 bari, or 1 alto + 1 tenor + 1 bari).
  • There is a limit of 2 percussionists per school
  • For special requests to nominate additional students outside of limitations above, please communicate directly with Festival Director and CMU Director of Bands, Jonathan Hinkle. 
Each student that a director nominates will automatically be 'registered' for the festival, and should commit to attend.  There is a $35/student registration fee associate with all activities that will be arrange on their behalf (all concerts, access to guest artists and conductors, Friday banquet, select break-time snacks, etc.).  Directors will be invoiced via email.  Directors should send or bring 1 check from their school for the total number of students nominated.  CMU will honor refunds for any cancelations made by 5pm on November 15.  After this date, no refunds are possible due to cancellation, but nominee substitutions may be made.
