Education Center is a free-of-cost to families and volunteer-only ministry of West Covina Christian Church and one the first Rotary International Caused Based clubs. Our organization started in response to distance-online-learning in 2020, during which many young K-12 students fell behind. We work in partnership with Cameron Elementary and the West Covina Unified School District by accepting students in need for homework help and enriching educational activities.
Our program is structured as 5-week sessions that occur three times during the school year: fall, winter and spring. Our sessions are designed to target critical times during a student's school education to uplift students, giving them the confidence and motivation to succeed in their school classroom. Although homework help is always needed, our program emphasizes creative and interactive reading, art, design, building and technology. We believe that these enriching activities give students a break from their academic curiculum from school, leaving them refreshed, joyful and confident in their abilities.
The primary tutors (or mentors) for these students are students themselves. Many of these mentors come from Cal Poly Pomona and local high schools. All involved parties are unpaid volunteers, and all families are welcome absolutely free of charge, only with the word of mouth agreement that all parties will commit to attending the sessions they sign up for during the 5-week-long session. Each student is assigned his or her own personal tutor, so failure to attend the complete 5-week session is detrimental to the program and other students.
We have refreshments, lounge areas, quiet areas and reliable internet access for any guardians or parties to use for work. You are welcome to either drop your student off and pick them up on time, or remain in our facilities.
