UHN EM Research Excellence Award Submission
1. The UHN ED Awards for Research Excellence will be awarded annually each June.
2. Classifications of Awards:
1) Best Research Publication: New Investigator (0-6 years of professional practice since completion of residency & fellowship training
2) Best Research Publication: Senior Investigator (Greater than 6 years professional practice since completion of residency and fellowship training.)
3. Amount awarded: Awards will be for $500 each
4. Criteria for award:
- The recipient must be Senior Responsible Author (i.e. first author, or supervisor of trainee who is first author).
- Applicant may make only one submission for a UHN EM Award for Research Excellence per award cycle
- Eligibility: The majority of the research work must have been completed while the researcher was staff at UHN ED. Furthermore, the researcher must still be a member of the UHN emergency medicine practice plan at the time the award will be granted.
- Final publication (ePub or print) must have occurred between April 1 2020 to April 1 2022. Applications for the award must be submitted by May 1 of the year the award is being granted.
- Publications considered for the Research Excellence Award should be in a Medline (NLM) indexed journal or the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
- Projects with the theme of quality improvement are eligible for the Quality Improvement Awards and are therefore not eligible for the Research Excellence Award. Any project approved under a UHN quality improvement REB exemption will be considered a quality improvement project.
- Invited external referees will evaluate each project using the standardized UHN EMRC Award Scoring Form and make a decision about the awards by consensus. Should external referees not be available, award decisions will be made by consensus of the UHN Emergency Department Research Committee.
- If external referees are not available and a member of the EMRC is eligible for an Award for Research Excellence, then s/he will recuse him or herself from the scoring process and be replaced by an external EM researcher designated by the Emergency Medicine Research Committee.
- If there is no applicant for an award in of the two categories in a given year, then two awards may be granted in the alternate category that year.
- Award recipients who receive funding for protected research time will forfeit the monetary component of this award.
