Cleaning and Disinfecting Resources
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) threatens Minnesota’s poultry. Infected flocks are depopulated and disposed of. Once barns are empty, they must be dry cleaned to successfully eliminate the avian influenza virus. Cleaning work requires the proper tools and equipment, sufficient labor resources, and commitment to quality. A properly cleaned barn will be heat treated or disinfected and tested to ensure it is safe for restocking. We are contacting you to offer your cleaning and disinfecting services for hire. Please take this short survey to be placed on an online list of contractors available to poultry producers statewide.

This survey is voluntary. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is collecting this information primarily for state and federal responders but may share your contact information with poultry producers in response to an HPAI outbreak. Note that any information you provide is public data under the law, and the MDA would be required to provide it to any person who asks for it.

Can you provide dry cleaning services?
Dry cleaning is the removal of gross contamination, organic material (soil, manure, bedding, feed), and debris from the premises or respective structures, via mechanical means like sweeping and scraping. Shovels, manure forks, brooms, and brushes should be used. The goal is to minimize the remaining organic material so disinfection can be effective. Air blowers should not be used for dry cleaning due to the risk of spreading pathogens.

Can you provide wet cleaning services?
Wet cleaning is the removal of gross contamination, organic material (soil, manure, bedding, feed), and debris from the premises or respective structures, via the use of water and soap or detergent. The washing process helps to further reduce the number of microorganisms as well as removing any oil, grease, or exudates that may inhibit the action of disinfection.
