National Food Service London Volunteer Application Form
UPDATE: We have now changed our delivery/collection day to one day only, but in doing so we have doubled our Saturday orders to make sure everyone can still access support and that people have larger orders to last throughout the week. To pull this off, we REALLY need more members of our packing and delivery team on Saturdays and more people to join our kitchen team on Fridays! If you have a couple of hours to a full day on Fridays or Saturdays throughout May, please sign up and get involved ASAP!

Hi there!

We are National Food Service North London, a group of local residents and volunteers, working together to ensure our community's food needs are met. From April 2020 we have been working with our community to provide an emergency food provision service. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, we prepare and distribute between 500+ healthy, home-cooked meals every week to people in need of access to food.

We are currently based at a community hall in Hackney, Springfield ward.

Volunteers prepare meal and grocery packages which are then delivered by bicycle or walking volunteers to local hubs within a 2.5 mile radius of the hall for distribution, as well as direct to the door of self-isolated, shielded and low-income families local to the service. NHS and other key workers will also be fed for free by the programme.

This form is designed to find out who might be interested in volunteering with our emergency food provision program and what roles you are best suited to. In addition to emergency food provision, there are lots of other ways to get involved, from working groups to community recovery action projects. If you would further information about any of our other projects, please email us at volunteer@nationalfoodservicelondon.org.uk

Our emergency food provision work is made up of six roles: cooks and food handlers, hotline workers and coordinators, and patron services and community deliveries.

- - Cooks: Fridays and (some) Saturdays. 09:00-16:00 (half shifts also possible).
Responsible for cooking meals, preparing bespoke orders and packaging into takeaway containers. Ideally should have Level 2 or above food hygiene certificate and experience working in a kitchen.

- - Food handlers: Fridays and (some) Saturdays. 09:00-16:00 (half shifts also possible).
Responsible for accepting, logging and organising deliveries of stock, as well as liaising between kitchen and patron services and packing up food orders. Also provides general support to the kitchen as necessary.

- -  Hotline Services: Mon-Sat, flexible shift times.
Responsible for monitoring the hotline (using Gradwell Voicemail services) and inputting orders into the ordering system. This role can be fulfilled remotely and is highly flexible around your schedule. This role suits people with experience in counselling, caring or with mental health first aid training.

- - Patron Services: Saturdays, 10:00 - 16:00. (half shifts also possible)
Responsible for fulfilling meal orders and coordinating community delivery volunteers.

- - Community deliveries: Saturdays 11:00-15:00. (shifts can be any length 1-4 hours)
Responsible for delivering packages to local hubs or homes. Cycling, walking or driving!

- - Coordinators: Monday - Saturday, flexible times (ideally 3 hours - half day)
We have two core coordinator roles, one revolving around volunteer support, the other around operations. There are loads of ways to get involved, from organising stock and deliveries, to recruitment and team building. This is a great role for people who want to contribute, or develop organisation, administration and communication experience.

** Site accessibility: the building is wheelchair accessible. Our operations are on the second floor, however there is a lift to the second floor and a ground floor access toilet. The doors are fire doors and heavy to push open, we can make arrangements to make these easier to navigate.

All volunteers will receive comprehensive training and briefing and will be working in small supportive teams. All volunteers will be required to follow stringent protocols following the COVID-19 guidelines at all times. You can read more about each of our roles here:
