CSA UNBOXED
We will not be running our Unboxed share this year, however, stay tuned to the Rooted Table Collective for news coming soon that will support this style of food shopping!

***

The set weekly veggie box value is $35/week.
This fluctuates throughout the season with earlier boxes having less items and later season boxes having more items. Early season boxes have loads of fresh greens with a few cold weather crops. Mid season boxes have a wide range of vegetables. Late season boxes have a wide range of summer and fall crops. (By the end of the season the average box value will exceed $35 each week... meaning, through our CSA box program you actually get more than you pay for! This is intentional, and its our way of giving back to our amazing CSA members who choose to support our farm at a time of the year we need it most!)

|| NEW this Year ||
We have made a number of changes to our 2022 program so please review carefully!

1) We will only be doing CSA veggie box pickups on THURSDAYS between 2:00 - 6:00 pm.
Pickups will continue to be at our veggie farm in Happy Valley.
We will continue to utilize the "pack your own" style of pickup that we started in 2021. This system works really well and allows everyone to choose sizes / portions that suit their family and household. There will always be a crew member onsite to greet you and answer any questions, as well as share news about the farm or what is coming up in the next boxes.

2) As another gesture of our appreciation to our CSA members, beginning this year all of our CSA members receive 10% off every purchase you make at our downtown farm store - The Rooted Table Collective - throughout the duration of the CSA program!! Each of our CSA members will be given a handcrafted Happy Hills CSA card that you can keep in your wallet and show when you visited the Rooted Table.

3) Our 2022 program includes a pre-scheduled / planned FARM TOUR!! Please mark your calendars with the following date:

SUNDAY JULY 25th  from  4:00 - 7:00 pm.

This farm tour will be our opportunity to share all about our farm with you, while we give you a tour in *peak season* with our gardens bursting with goodness. Learn about how we grow your food, why we grow it the way we do, and for sure you will learn about our family and our journey to getting to this point in our ever-growing farm business. Every year our tours are different, so even if you have joined us in the past, we promise you a good time!! We will release all of the details of this event at the beginning of July. (If you can't make this dedicated tour for CSA members only, there will be opportunities later in the summer for you to attend a farm tour that we run for the public).

4) We are going to try something new this year as a revamped way to reduce our plastic produce bag usage in our CSA. All of your greens will come weekly in reusable tupperware-style containers. Every week that you come to pick up your veggies, simply bring your empty containers back from the week before and drop them in the container crate. In week 18 we will ask that you bring all of the Happy Hills containers back that you have and they will remain ours. Week 18 greens will be the only week packed in produce bags. Every container that goes out will have "HHF" written in sharpie on it so hopefully you can tell easily which ones are ours. We have containers that fit well in your fridge so we are hopeful that this method of reducing packaging will be successful. We are excited!

All CSA members will also receive our annual digital recipe book chock full of delicious recipes to enjoy all year long! This recipe book has been growing over the past 4 years - each growing season we add more of our favourite recipes. Its a big hit!

*PICK-UP LOCATION*
-------------------------------------

Veggie box pickup will happen at our farm!

PICK-UP
Thursday's   |   2:00 - 6:00 PM

Our address is 2302'eh' Happy Valley Road.

*ITEM EXCHANGE POLICY*
--------------------------------------------

We understand that not everyone likes to eat every single vegetable. While one of the purposes of the CSA box program is to introduce participants to new vegetables and encourage participants to eat a wide range of vegetables, we do appreciate that on occasion you just might not like something. Please let us know in advance if there is a particular vegetable that you do not wish to receive and we will do our best to accommodate this. That said, we will determine on a case by case basis which requests are manageable, and this may result in not all requests being approved. CSA programs are meant to facilitate seasonal diets in participants, and it is the nature of this program that you will see a shift in vegetable availability throughout the season.

When possible we will have a crate of assorted veggies that you may exchange an item with.
We will put these details on our CSA white board each week!

*BOX HOLDS // MISSED PICK-UPS*
-------------------------------------------------------

You are always welcome to have someone else pick-up your box for you.
Please let us know in advance, either by email or text, who we should be expecting to pick up your box.

If you miss your pick-up time and we do not hear from you by the end of your pick-up window your box items will be donated to the food bank or a family in need, at our discretion.

If you cannot make the pick-up time and you do connect with us prior to the end of your pick-up window, we can make arrangements for you to pick up your box at the farm at another time. It is still best to give us as much notice as possible. It is our preference to ensure you are getting the freshest harvest possible, so if you know you can't make it, we will probably hold off on your harvest.

If you are going away and do not have someone picking up your box for you, you can place your box on hold, so long as you let us know a minimum of 5 days in advance. You will not be receiving a refund for your missed week(s), however, you can request a $30 farm credit for one missed week. We only give one $30 credit per season, even if you miss more than one week (so your best bet is to have a friend grab your missed box(es)!).

*BOX CONTENTS*
----------------------------------------------

This is always subject to change for a number of different reasons, but this year you will likely see:

VEGETABLES - microgreens, lettuces, spinach, arugula, swiss chard, kale, tatsoi, carrots, beets, parsnips, salad turnips, radish, multiple varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, leeks, red onions, white onions, green onions, garlic, potatoes, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, summer and winter squash, peas, and beans.

HERBS - cress, basil, oregano, sage, tarragon, lavender, rosemary, parsley, cilantro, savory, chives, and thyme...to name a few.

It is important to highlight the seasonality of our produce, and how this affects your box contents:

EARLY boxes (June - Mid July) - expect an abundance of green vegetables (greens, microgreens, green onions, herbs, radish, baby carrots, salad turnips, etc)

MID Summer boxes (July-August) - full range of vegetables and herbs listed above (but no winter squash, parsnips, onions).

LATE boxes (September - October) - full range of vegetables and herbs listed above, plus winter squash, parsnips, onions, and fall roots (storage turnips, rutabega, etc.)

We are also growing a variety of new veggies for our restaurants and chefs, and any surplus of these may be offered to our CSA box customers. Yay!

*OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU*
------------------------------------------------

As your farmers, we have a commitment in this relationship, too! We are committed to providing you with an abundant variety of fresh, delicious and nutrient-dense vegetables every week of the season. Although we are not certified organic, we do believe in the principles of organic certification, but we like to think we take it a step even further, a step beyond organic. Simply put, we use absolutely no chemicals whatsoever on our farm - not even those chemicals which are approved for certified organic farming. To us, the most important thing is our soil. We protect our soil. We cherish our soil. We work to regenerate our soil so that we are continuously building nutrient content, mineral content, biodiversity and life in our soil. We also farm by hand. This is a very important principle at Happy Hills - every inch of our soil, every crop, every harvest - its all managed and grown by our hands. This is our way to be fully in tune with the food we are growing and our farm environment. It is these practices which make it so that we can ensure you are getting the highest quality, most nutritious and safest to eat produce possible.
And that, friends, is our commitment to you!

Some other things to note:

Produce Storage - We take care to grow high quality vegetables, so you will find that they stay fresh for a long time! Still, there are some things you can do at home to help ensure your food stays good and fresh until you eat it. You may notice that some things are minimally washed. The reason for this is because most produce, when left unwashed, will stay fresher for longer. At this point we are washing our greens, but even this is just a cool rinse primarily to remove field heat. Please give your items a wash prior to eating (if you like, but there is not necessarily a need!). We will also be sharing tips throughout the growing season for storing your farm fresh produce, so stay tuned to our newsletters during the summer.

Crop Availability and Failure - We grow a large variety of crops throughout the year, but there are certain crops that don't perform well at certain stages in the season. We will always strive to provide a great variety in your weekly box, but please keep in mind that seasonality does come into play and certain items will not always be available. Early summer boxes will contain a lot of greens and will be a bit smaller than the boxes you receive mid-summer and in the fall. Boxes later in the year may surprise you with extras you aren't expecting! You may see less lettuces during the high heat of the summer, because many varieties dislike very hot temperatures. Crop failure is a reality of any farmer. In some instances, we may lose an entire crop due to adverse weather conditions or unexpected events. Participating in our CSA is sharing this risk, and understanding that things like this happen on occasion. Here are three examples that affected our farm in the past three years:

2018 - August was so smokey we saw rarely any sun. The result was we had next to no tomato crop.
2019 - We lost our entire onion crop due to earth worms (go figure!!), cut worms, and too much spring rain.
2020 - We had almost no bean crop! This was due to a very, very wet spring and wacky summertime storms. We had the most intense storm hit us on June 23 that took out a lot of crops and almost our tomato tunnels. We then got hit by the most intense hail storm we have ever seen in Rossland at the end of July that almost destroyed the bean plants that did manage to survive.
2021 - We had almost no salad mix or lettuce! We had so much wildlife pressure that we lost more than 500 heads of romaine lettuce (bears ate them!!) and every single bed of our salad mix in the fall was decimated by bears and deer!

We work so hard to navigate and overcome every hurdle that comes our way. Whether its freak hail storms in july, or 40 degree temperatures in June, or whether we are so smoked out that we still suffer respiratory consequences in October.... or whether the wildlife in our area is so hungry that they need to survive off of lettuce of all things... we always do our best to mitigate these problems and do better next year. In 2022 we are focusing on fencing!!!

*COMMUNICATION*
---------------------------------

Our primary form of communication with you will be via email. It is very important that we have your correct email address and that you are able receive emails from us! Please check your junk mail box if you are not receiving emails from us - particulary if you use a hotmail email address.
.
Email is the easiest way for you to reach us at any time as well. If you cannot email us, please send a text to our cell phone. You can phone us, however, you will likely receive our answering machine. We do our best to check our messages regularly, but we prefer for you to email or text if you need to reach us. On very rare occasions, something happens on our end that may affect our pick-up date / time / location. If this happens we will be contacting members by email. As well, periodically throughout the season (usually once per month) we will send updates or announcements, or just a hello to garner some feedback.

If you are trying to reach us, please understand that our work days are very long, typically starting by 5 AM and not ending until 10 PM. We appreciate your patience while you are awaiting an email or text response, or a call back from us.

*REFUNDS OR CANCELLATIONS*
-----------------------------------------------------

The purpose of Community Supported Agriculture programs are to join the farmer and eater in a relationship that see's a shared investment, risk and reward - like a partnership! Shall you wish to cancel your membership, we cannot offer a refund at any time. The biggest reason being is that the financial investment we receive from our CSA program is entirely invested into our farm by March 1st.

Our CSA relationships support and sustain our growing season, and in return, our farm supports and sustains you with nutritious, healthy food for the duration of the program. Your investment - and ours, too - is for the entire growing season.

We understand that things come up. If for any reason you are unable to continue with your membership, you are welcome to transfer the remainder of your share to another person. You may do this at any time throughout the season. Please notify us as soon as possible if this is something you wish to do. We may be able to help you find someone who can take over your CSA share!

Similarly, we cannot downgrade a Full Season Share to a Half Season Share. If you wish to upgrade from the Half Season to Full Season Share, this may be possible - please reach out to us to discuss. Thank you for your understanding!

*COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS*
------------------------------------------------

Periodically we will reach out to our members for feedback, and at the end of the season we will send out a member survey to see what folks liked or didn't like about the program. Throughout the season if you have questions or would like to chat with us please connect with us via email or in person at the farm stand or farmers' market.
