We would like all juniors to estimate the financial aid they will receive next year using the Federal Student Aid Estimator at https://studentaid.gov/aid-estimator/
Read over the page and hit Start when you're ready to begin. Enter your basic information on the first page. Choose "first year (freshman)" on the last question. If you had any issues with the first page, please let us know below:
The next page asks if you have any dependents that you support. If you do not have children, you can click no.

You will then be asked additional dependency questions. It is important to know your dependency status. If you can check yes for any of the statements, you will qualify as an Independent Student and you can do your FAFSA next year without parent information.

Do you have any questions about this section? Please let us know below (or talk with our UB staff) so we can assist:
If you clicked "none of the above," you are considered a Dependent Student and will need to answer a few questions about your parents in order to find out how much aid you'll be eligible for. If you are an Independent Student, you will be asked questions about yourself only.

If you do not know your parent's age, it is ok to estimate on this form.

Household size means how many people live in your house total.

If you are asked for parent income, you can find this on your parents' tax returns under "adjusted gross income." Ask your parents for an estimate of their income in 2020 or 2021 if you are not sure. It does not matter which year you use, but go for the year that is most similar to your current situation.

If you work, you may be asked to record an estimate of your own income.

When the form asks about assets, you can again estimate. If you aren't sure, just leave the numbers at 0.

Continue on with the questions and let us know if you had any issues with any of them:

You will be given an Estimated EFC (expected family contribution). This number roughly represents how much you could be responsible for paying for your college. What is your EFC?
*
The Pell Grant is federal money that does NOT have to be paid back. It is need based and you must fill out the FAFSA to be eligible for it. How much of the Pell Grant are you estimated to receive?  *
Were you given an estimated amount for Federal Work-Study? This is federal money given to you based on need, but you must work a small number of hours on campus each week in order to receive it.
*
Are you eligible for any loans? What is the maximum available direct loans for you based on this form? *
What is your total amount of Estimated Federal Aid?  *
If you are staying in WV for college, you may also be eligible for State Aid! The PROMISE Scholarship is based on grades and test scores and awards students an extra $5000 per year. Are you eligible (or close to being eligible) for the PROMISE Scholarship? The requirements are posted here: https://www.collegeforwv.com/programs/promise-scholarship/requirements/  *
Another form of State Aid is the West Virginia High Education Grant. This is based on need so when you do your FAFSA next year, you'll find out if you are eligible. Many students are awarded around $3000 in the WV Higher Education Grant.

Do you have any questions about State Aid?

Estimating your financial aid can help you make good choices next year when it comes to college. If you are not receiving very much federal aid, you may want to look for a college that doesn't have a high Cost of Attendance (COA). Talk with your Academic Advisor about realistic college choices for you! How do you feel about financial aid after completing this activity?  *
We understand that financial aid is a complicated topic and UB is here to discuss any questions you have about it. Please review this activity with your Academic Advisor if you have any questions at all!
At our September Challenge Session, you heard from Nevaeh Nichols who talked about the LEDA Scholars Program. Are you going to apply for the LEDA Program (not required)? The link is: https://ledascholars.org and the application is due December 12.  *
