According to research in college and career readiness, writing is the most important skill students need for success in any future pathway. PBL encourages authentic writing tasks, but the fact is that writing assessments shouldn’t just happen at the end of a unit or for the final product. Writing isn’t just about quickwrites, rough drafts, and final drafts. And it doesn’t just happen in English class. Engaging assignments - and lessons to secure success in those assignments - should represent every part of the PBL unit, from unit launch to culminating presentation.
No matter the subject area, teachers can learn how to encourage the growth of writing skills. Writing can take place throughout a PBL unit, so that it isn’t just used as a summative assessment. And teachers of all subject areas can learn how to assign and coach students to promote writing growth.
In this day-long workshop, you will walk away knowing how to use writing...
•
As both formative and summative assessments
•
To launch a PBL unit
•
To deepen the inquiry process
•
To encourage collaboration
•
In different methods of peer critique and review
•
To help student reflect
•
In creating a prototype
•
In developing a public product
You will also learn some tips and tricks to give quick and efficient feedback in writing even if you don’t typically teach it in your content area.
So join Heather Wolpert-Gawron, expert PBL teacher and coach, staff blogger for Edutopia, and Fellow of the National Writing Project, as she guides teachers in all subject areas to use writing throughout the PBL unit.
