AMSA 2024 Retreat Application Form

About the Retreat  

At this retreat, attendees will work on teaching and/or research related to the critical study of men and masculinity. 20 spots will be available, and applicants will be selected based on their application, and the retreat will run on the minimum of 18 participants. 

The retreat will cover two key areas, teaching and research. Topics include:

Retreat Facilitators

The retreat will be run by Dr Andrea Waling and Reader Chris Haywood, alongside an opportunity to learn from Professor John Oliffe, our keynote for the 2024 conference and Dr Frank Karioris. 

Dr Andrea Waling is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Health and a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at La Trobe University, Australia. To date she has attracted more than $3.8 million (AUD) in research funding, and more than 70+ research publications. Dr Waling is co-leading a program of research at ARCSHS focusing on the intersections of technology, gender, sexuality, and sexual intimacies, as well as explorations of young people and sexual literacies. She has published several papers on the study of men and masculinity, bodies, and sex and sexual practices.

Reader Chris Haywood is a Reader in Critical Masculinity Studies in the School of Arts and Cultures. He has been Director of Research, Director of Teaching and Learning and Director of Postgraduate Studies. His previous work has included examining different dating practices, including speed dating, online dating, holiday romance, anonymous sex and mobile romance. Alongside this, his research interests include cultural analyses of schooling and education, with an emphasis on the interplay between gender, generation and 'Race' /ethnicity. His current research explores the hidden world of sex clubs.

Professor John Oliffe a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair at the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, and a professor at the Department of Nursing, University of Melbourne. As the founder and lead investigator of UBC's Men's Health Research program, his qualitative work focuses on the influence of gendered health behaviours and illness management, and its impact on partners, families and overall life quality. He has expertise in wide-ranging qualitative methods, and the findings drawn from his research offers guidance to clinicians and researchers, and have informed evaluated tailored interventions for men.

Dr Frank G. Karioris (he/they) is a Visiting Professor of Writing at Jeonbuk National University (South Korea). Having worked and lectured in more than a dozen countries they are the author of the monograph An Education in Sexuality & Sociality: Heteronormativity on Campus and editor of Masculinities Under Neoliberalism.

Retreat Location

The retreat will be held at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire, USA. It will be held June 13th 2024, a day before the start of the AMSA conference (June 14th-16th).

Cost

The cost of the retreat is $650 USD and includes:

  • two nights’ accommodation (June 12th, night before and June 13th) in the conference venue
  • one day breakfast, snacks and lunch
  • a registration fee
  • transportation from Boston's Logan International Airport to Plymouth, NH
AMSA has endeavored to make this retreat as affordable as it can for potential participants. We recognize that $650 USD may seem like a lot. All four facilitators have generously offered their time free of cost and bring together more than 30 years of research and teaching expertise to support participants. Participants will be given the opportunity to work closely with facilitators who have expertise in bringing in large and complex competitive research grants as well as working with various community, government and industry stakeholders, significant publishing track records across journals, books, and other forms of writing, and significant teaching experience.

Bursary

AMSA is able to offer one student bursary and one early career researcher bursary. This bursary will cover the $650 USD cost to attend.

  • Students must be currently enrolled in a PhD program, advanced PhD students within one-two years of completion of their dissertation. 
  • Early career researchers are defined as 1-5 years post PhD completion, and for the purpose of this bursary, not currently employed in a fixed-term tenure-track position or similar academic role. Those in non-tenure track fixed-term or casual/sessional positions (i.e. adjuncts) are welcome to apply.

Payment

Applicants for the bursary are still required to provide a deposit. Successful bursary applicants will be refunded the deposit or can opt for this to be applied to their conference registration if they are attending the conference.  

A deposit of $100 USD is required as part of the application process. Pay the deposit via this Deposit Form.  This will be paid towards the retreat if selected. If you are not selected and/or have chosen to not be on the waitlist, it will be paid towards your conference registration (if you are attending the 2024 AMSA conference) or can be refunded. The application will offer a selection for your choice. Deposits will not be refunded if you are unable to attend. 

Please note that applications missing the deposit will not be considered. Your application will be crossed check with the deposit.

For those who are accepted, full payment must be made by April 30th 2024. Payments not made by this date means that you will forfeit your place in the program, which will then be given to the next available applicant on the waiting list.
