2021 King County Queen Cell Project
Purpose of this project is to improve the genetics of honey bees in the King County area so that our colonies can thrive with minimal disease and mite controlling measures.

As part of this project in exchange for a queen cell you will:
1. Help these queens be successful and place them in colonies with healthy bees having low mite counts. >> They will not turn around a dying hive!
2. Monitor your mite levels several times a year. >> If your colony has high mite levels please treat them!
3. Look for disease and other hygienic behaviors.
4. Provide status reports on the colony we can use to identify promising genetic lines. >> We will use a shared google sheet for you to submit regular progress updates.

Please note: If you get really lucky and get an exceptional queen we would like to use her (or her drones) in future cell raising batches. We are working together to enrich the local population!

If this sounds exciting, please fill out this form!

Project Goals
1. Distribute queen cells from exceptional colonies that do not need any form of disease or mite controlling measures (Supplemental sugar syrup feeding, and space management for honey production/swarm control are performed).
>> We will evaluate the colonies these queens produce after having mated with our local gene pool for; disease, mite levels, hygiene, production, and other behaviors.
2. Queens that lead successful colonies will enrich our area with drones that carry desirable disease and mite controlling measures.
3. Bring like minded beekeepers together to improve the genetics of honey bee hives in the King County area.
4. Determine if areas of King County have detrimental disease and mite levels.
