Requirements for acceptance into the Glacier Travel school:
Deadline for application: December 8th
Completion of the following modules (or equivalent experience) from the Technical Climbing School:
- Navigation 1 and 2
- Intermediate Rock
- Technical Snow
- Rock Rescue Level 1
- Alpine Climbing School/Basic Mountaineering School
- High Peak alpine snow climb
- WFA or WFR
- AIARE 1
In addition:
- Snow climbing experience: students must be able to demonstrate basic crampon and ice ax technique, self-arrest, snow anchors, glissading. Ideally, students should have successfully completed at least three snow couloir climbs; however, admission will be considered for students who have successfully completed a single couloir climb greater than 800’ on steep snow that requires crampons and ice ax (at least three completed couloirs are required for participation on a Glacier Travel glaciated peak graduation climb)
- Ability to demonstrate proficiency tying the basic climbing knots and passing the Glacier Travel knot test during the first class (including figure 8 tie-in, figure 8 on a bight, double fisherman, butterfly, Munter hitch, clove hitch, girth hitch, Prussik, Klemheist, autoblock, water, overhang on a bight, flat overhand/ “EKD”and mule knot)
- Ability to demonstrate proficient basic technical climbing knowledge: belaying, rappelling with an autoblock, and ascending a rope.
- Winter Camping School is strongly recommended.
- A high level of fitness is expected to complete the Glacier Travel program.
