Acknowledgement of Country

Switchboard Victoria is based on the lands of the Yaluk-ut Weelam clan of the Boon Wurrung peoples. We acknowledge that our work takes place on lands that are under colonial occupation and that sovereignty has never been ceded. We hope to pay our deepest respects to Boon Wurrung elders, past and present, and wish to extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People across this Country we know as Australia.

About the Declaration of LGBTQIA+SB Lived Experience Leadership in Suicide Prevention
We know that issues such as discrimination and social stigma experienced by LGBTQIA+SB people can lead to poorer mental health outcomes and higher rates of suicidality compared to other groups in Australia. Mainstream suicide prevention services often don’t reach (or do not properly support) LGBTIQA+SB communities.

As part of our LGBTQIA+SB suicide prevention work, Switchboard Victoria is developing a national Declaration of LGBTQIA+SB Lived Experience Leadership in Suicide Prevention. The Declaration is a document that includes a set of lived experience informed demands that support safe suicide prevention service delivery for LGBTQIA+SB people at all levels of healthcare. Our aim is that individuals, healthcare organisations and governments will sign onto this important Declaration, making a commitment to LGBTQIA+SB suicide prevention.
About our Declaration Codesign Series
Every LGBTQIA+SB person has a unique perspective and story, and it is very important to us that this Declaration is created by diverse LGBTQIA+SB people with lived experiences of suicide. When we talk about lived experience of suicide, we include anyone who has experienced suicidal distress or a suicide attempt, people who have been bereaved or lost someone to suicide, and people who have cared for a loved one through suicidal distress or a suicide attempt.

We will be running 10 codesign sessions over a period of six (6) weeks that reflect different intersections within LGBTQIA+SB communities. These sessions will include codesign with the following groups:
  • LGBTQIA+SB people
  • Trans and gender diverse people
  • Intersex people
  • Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander LGBTQIA+SB people
  • LGBTQIA+SB people of faith
  • LGBTQIA+SB Black, Indigenous and / or People of Colour
  • Neurodivergent LGBTQIA+SB people
  • Disabled LGBTQIA+SB people
  • LGBTQIA+SB People of Faith
  • Young LGBTQIA+SB people (18 - 25)
  • Older LGBTQIA+SB people (65+)
We recognise that defining any LGBTQIA+SB person by a single intersection is limiting and not representative of our wonderfully diverse and intersectional community. Therefore, we welcome people to express interest in any and all codesign sessions they would like to contribute to. You are invited to nominate which sessions you would like to attend in Section 3 of this form.

All participants will receive a $100 honorarium for their participation in a codesign session.
Sharing your lived experience
While we will not ask you to directly share your lived experience of suicide in the codesign sessions, you may choose to share part of your story. Additionally, it is likely that some discussions will connect to your personal lived experiences.

Before submitting an expression of interest, we recommend reading our 'Are you ready?' document, which provides you with an opportunity to reflect on whether you are in a position to engage with your lived experience through this codesign work.

In the lead up to each codesign session, all participants will receive a check-in call / email from our friendly team to have a quick chat about what you can expect from the codesign session and answer any questions you may have. This will be a great opportunity to voice any concerns that you may have about sharing your lived experience.

A Switchboard LGBTIQA+ peer supporter will be available during and after the codesign session for support and debriefing.
