Consultation & Supervision

African centered consultation and supervision is a counseling approach that focuses on the experiences, culture, and values of people of African descent. It aims to empower individuals by providing a safe and supportive space to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This approach acknowledges the impact of historical and systemic oppression on African Americans and seeks to help them navigate and overcome these challenges. African centered consultation and supervision also encourages the use of traditional African healing practices and spirituality as part of the therapeutic process.

Consultation is a process that occurs between two mental health professionals where one is seeking the other's help insight or assistance regarding a particular matter or problem it is essentially the sharing of experiences advice and expertise between two mental health professionals.

Supervision is an evaluative and interactive process where the supervisor (who is more proficient in the field) oversees the work of the supervisee, the person with lesser skills and knowledge for the purpose of enhancing professional skills and functioning. Itis the supervisor’s responsibility to make sure the supervisee is adequately trained (this includes making sure the supervisee adheres to the legal andethical obligations of their licensing body). The supervisor-supervisee relationship interactions tend to be much more consistent than that of consultation with ongoing evaluation feedback and performance reviews.
