Program Overview
Huston-Tillotson University is partnering with Healing Hands
Community Doula Project to offer a comprehensive doula + community health worker
certification. Doulas are non-clinical support personnel who provide emotional,
informational, and physical support before, during, and after labor and birth.
Community health workers are frontline public health workers who serve as links
between health and social service organizations and community members. Our
training provides both certifications, equipping you to provide holistic and
culturally aligned support for Texas mothers.
The certification program involves three instructional elements:
in-person doula training (40 hours over 1 week), in-person professional
development workshops (20 hours over 3 days), and a hybrid community health
worker training with a mix of online and in-person elements (160 hours over 16
weeks). In addition, trainees will consult with experienced doula mentors over the
course of their training year to assist with 10 births. (Please see
below for training cohort start dates.)
This is not a weekend doula training. Our certification involves
training, mentorship, and continuing education for 8-12 months. Our program is
rigorous and time consuming, and requires a full commitment. In return, we
provide training, mentorship, professional development, connections to client
networks, financial support, and a pathway to an impactful career.
