Spring Version - Block 1 - Thursdays - After School Program

Please use 1 form for each child you are registering.

This block of the after school program will run Thursdays, February 6th through March 20th, 2025 from 3:15 to 5 p.m. All participants will be escorted (on foot) from the school to the Moosomin Visual Arts Centre.

This is for children aged 6 through 12.

There will be 6 days total: February 6th, 13th, 27th, March 6th, 13th, and 20th.

During this block of programming, sketching, painting and cardmaking will be covered. If your child was enrolled in the Fall version of Block 1, repeating this block in the Spring version means we will be taking the basics we developed a bit further and working on more complex topics.

Sketching: At a minimum it is hoped that we learn how the basic shapes are used in construction of all items and how to use one and two-point perspective. It is also hoped that we have the chance to explore different mediums like pencil, charcoal, pastels (oil and chalk) as well as ink and the care needed when using these supplies.

Painting: Incorporating what we have learned about the elements of art, basics of design and rules of composition we hope to produce watercolour and acrylic paintings. We would also learn about the differences in these two types of paintings as well as the care of the painting supplies.

Cardmaking: We would like to explore various cardmaking techniques (e.g. embellishing, die-cutting, punching, matting and layering, paper piecing, etc.) and tools for cutting and fastening our materials to make at least a four-card set suitable for use for a special occasion. Participants would learn how to safely and respectfully use the cricut machine, cutting mats, knives, paper trimmers and quilling materials.

Total cost: $120 per child. MVAC Family Club holders: $90 per child. Send e-transfer to moosominvac@gmail.com. Include your child's name in the comments of the e-transfer as well as "Spring Block 1" and "Thursdays".

* The fee is nonrefundable; if you miss a day you will not be reimbursed. In the event that we have to cancel a class we will do our best to schedule an alternate date.

Behaviour Philosophies

Good behaviour is necessary for effective learning and teaching to take place. Children are expected to behave in a way that makes it possible for everyone to learn and the instructor to teach.

The student rules are as follows:

• Follow instructions first time

• Keep hands, feet, objects and unkind words to ourselves

• Respect one another and our surroundings, no matter where we are

• Follow the rules of the space we are in (there may be different rules and expectations for outdoor activity spaces than indoor activity spaces) respect the supplies provided for us

• Be ready when an adult signals for attention

• Use correct voice level

• Respect the supplies provided for us

If a child chooses not to follow the rules, the consequences are as follows:

• Reminder

• Verbal warning

• Child may be asked to sit out of an activity

• Discussion with parent following the incident

• Parent will attend future program days with the child (number of days determined by the board)

• Removal from the program

There will be a zero-tolerance policy for any dangerous behaviours.

*The board has the authority to skip steps in this process if deemed necessary.

Successful instructors

• Create positive learning cultures.

• Take leadership of their class.

• Organize and plan lessons effectively.

• Are flexible in their planning.

• Believe all children have the ability to achieve.

• Engage inattentive children.

• Involve children in the overall classroom management, giving them ownership and responsibility.

• Have a sense of humour which can be used to disarm challenging situations.

• Have positive body language.

• Model the desired behaviour.

• Welcome children into class.

• Deal with behaviour fairly and consistently.
