AUDITION REGISTRATION: West Side Story & The Boys in the Band

The Public Theater of San Antonio and The Classic Theatre of San Antonio invite talented actors and dancers of all backgrounds to audition for our upcoming West Side Story and The Boys in the Band productions. 

West Side StoryDirected by Rick Sanchez in partnership with Ballet San Antonio. This musical will be performed in the Russell Hill Rogers Theater this spring. Date breakdown below.

The Boys in the Band, Directed by Tim Hedgepeth. This play will be performed in The Classic Theater (formerly Cellar) this summer. Date breakdown below.

Virtual Audition Information: The virtual audition submission deadline is Monday, February 5, 2023, by 7 p.m. Submission instructions are detailed in the form below.

Callback Information
Callbacks for West Side Story, if necessary, will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. in the RHR. Be prepared to read sides from the script, which will be provided at the audition and to dance. Wear clothing that you can move comfortably in. Individual invitations will be sent directly to the email address listed on the audition form. West Side Story Audition Information:

Audition Requirements: • For consideration, please prepare 32 bars from a classic musical theatre canon. A pianist will be available at auditions. Bring clearly marked sheet music for the pianist. (You must have your song memorized at auditions.)

Please provide a color headshot and resume. Resumes should include a current phone number and email address. Ages 16+ will be accepted. Minors are required to provide a parent/guardian email and phone number on audition registration as well as a resume. No correspondence will be made with a minor's personal email. Please be sure to include any and all musical instruments played and level of proficiency under Special Skills.

Rehearsal Information: Rehearsals will commence on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, and are generally held Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be provided post-casting.

Character Breakdown The following is a detailed breakdown of the roles in West Side Story, along with specific vocal ranges. The given ranges are approximate and may vary. Some characters may have a wider range or specific requirements for certain songs. Some roles may be doubled for some performers. There will also be understudy positions available for this production.

Tony - The male lead, former Jet, and romantic interest of Maria. Strong dance skills are required, especially for the "Dance at the Gym" and "Cool" scenes. Lyric Tenor (Bb2 - Bb4)

Maria - The female lead is the sister of Bernardo and love interest of Tony. Moderate dance skills may be required as Maria participates in ensemble dance numbers. Lyric/Soubrette Soprano (Bb3 - C6)

Anita - Bernardo's girlfriend, Maria's friend, is a central character in the story. Strong dance skills are essential, especially for the iconic "America" and "Dance at the Gym" sequences. Mezzo-Soprano/Belter (F3 - D5)

Bernardo - Leader of the Sharks, brother of Maria, and a strong, authoritative figure. Strong dance skills are necessary, particularly for the energetic and stylized choreography in the "Dance at the Gym" and opening scene. Baritone (Bb2 - Eb4)

Riff - Leader of the Jets, best friend to Tony, and a key character in the Jets gang. Strong dance skills are crucial, as Riff is the leader of the Jets and is heavily involved in dance numbers like "Jet Song" and "Cool." High Tenor (Bb2 - G4)

Chino - A member of the Sharks arranges to marry Maria and plays a crucial role in the plot. Moderate dance skills may be required for ensemble dance sequences. Tenor/Baritone (B2 - F4)

Doc - The owner of the store where Tony works provides guidance to the characters. Baritone (C3 - F4)

Anybodys - A tomboyish member of the Jets who strives to be part of the gang. Strong dance skills are important, as Anybodys is often involved in the ensemble dance numbers. Mezzo-Soprano (F3 - E5)

Action - A member of the Jets, known for his aggressive and confrontational nature. Strong dance skills are needed for the Jets' choreography, particularly in "Cool." Baritone/Tenor (C3 - G4)

Baby John - A younger member of the Jets, naive and innocent. Moderate dance skills may be required for ensemble dance numbers. Tenor/Baritone (C3 - G4)

Graziella  - A Jet girl. Strong dance skills are needed for the Jets' choreography. Mezzo-Soprano (G3 - E5)

Velma - A Jet girl and a prominent member of the gang. Strong dance skills are important, especially for the "Dance at the Gym" scene. Mezzo-Soprano (F3 - E5)

Pepe and Indio - Members of the Sharks with distinct personalities. Moderate dance skills may be required for ensemble dance sequences. Tenor/Baritone (B2 - F4)

Shark Girls (Consuela, Rosalia, etc.) - Members of the Sharks gang with individual personalities. Strong dance skills are essential, especially for "America" and other ensemble dance numbers. Soprano/Mezzo-Soprano (C4 - E5)

Officer Krupke - A well-meaning but somewhat bumbling police officer. Baritone (Bb2 - F4)

Schrank - A prejudiced police detective who tries to keep the peace between the gangs. Baritone (B2 - E4)


The Boys in the Band Audition Information:

Audition Requirements: For consideration, please prepare a 1-minute contemporary monologue by an American playwright (dramatic or comedic) from 1960 to the present. (You must have your monologue memorized at auditions.) 

Please provide a color headshot and resume. Resumes should include a current phone number and email address. Ages 18+ will be accepted. We are not accepting minors for this production.

Rehearsal Information: Rehearsals will commence on Monday, April 29, 2024, and generally be held Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be provided post-casting.

Synopsis:
Mart Crowley's classic comedy-drama unfolds in Michael's Upper East Side apartment in New York in the mid-1960s. Friends gather for a party at which Michael hosts a birthday celebration for Harold, his dear friend (and enemy). Throughout a booze-drenched evening, secrets are exposed, and lies are laid bare in this ground-breaking play about pre-Stonewall life in gay America. 

Character Breakdown:
Nine gay men, all male-presenting. Most characters can be of any ethnicity. (Note: the actor playing Bernard must be Black). There will also be understudy positions available for this production.

Donald, late 20s to late 30s Michael's supportive and on-again-off-again lover. A good friend. He listens and watches. Appears nude or partially dressed in one scene.

Emory, 30-40 Outrageous, funny,  and outspoken, he doesn't hide his sexuality, and that sometimes gets him in trouble.

Larry, late 20s- 30s Handsome and masculine-presenting. Outspoken, he Loves playing the field but also wants a commitment from Hank, with whom he is hopelessly in love. Jealous. Confused.

Hank mid-30s-mid 50s Handsome and careful. Father of two, recently divorced. Loves his partner, Larry, despite the challenges of their relationship. A good guy. Sensible.

Bernard, 30-40 A kind and handsome man dealing with being Black as well as gay in the 1960s.

Harold, 30-40 He is the birthday boy. He's smart and sarcastic. He knows Michael better than anyone. Jewish.

Cowboy, early 20s A sweet and lovable prostitute/stripper. Naive and often ignorant. He appears shirtless in one scene.

Alan, 30-40 Very handsome. Masculine. Miserable. Hiding a secret. A friend of Michael's from college days. Most likely closeted.

The role of Michael has been cast. 

Understudy roles will also be available.

If you only want to be considered for one production, you only need to prepare the requirements for that one show.
