Mount Vernon Road Sidewalk Project

The West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways (WVDOH) is seeking input on their project to construct sidewalks along Mount Vernon Road. Below, please find a summary of the project as well as instructions for commenting and how to find more information.

Purpose and Need for the Project
Development within the proposed project area has led to an increased need for safely accommodating pedestrians. Land use along Mount Vernon Road includes housing sub-divisions, apartments, and commercial facilities. The existing roadway has approximately 9-foot-wide lanes and has no sidewalks. The purpose of the project is to provide pedestrian facilities, along with combination curb and gutter, for the approximately 1.75-mile loop of Mount Vernon Road (CR 34/14) between its intersections with Teays Valley Road (WV-34) in Hurricane, WV.

Preferred Alternative
The proposed project includes constructing pedestrian facilities, which alternate sides, along Mount Vernon Road to include combination curb and gutter and a 5-foot-wide sidewalk. Total of 70 parcels will be impacted, with 58 parcel having limited right-of-way takes. The estimated project cost is $4.6 million dollars. No residential or business relocation is required. Construction is anticipated to begin Summer of 2024.
