Bird Uncaged: Justice Reform & Redemption

Second installment of the Critical Dialogue Series on October 23rd at 6:00 PM EST:

We are delighted to invite you as a distinguished guest to “Beyond the Border: A Critical Dialogue Series" taking place at 6:00 pm on October 23rd in the Dimond Library's Addison Room at the University of New Hampshire. This year's second event, entitled, Bird Uncaged: Justice Reform and Redemption will feature Marlon Peterson, author of Bird Uncaged: An Abolitionist Freedom Song.

Peterson is the Executive Director of the College and Community Fellowship and host of the DEcarcerated Podcast. In addition to authoring Bird Uncaged, he has written, developed programs, lectured, organized, and advocated alongside the formerly incarcerated, victims of gun violence, womxn, immigrants, and young people.  Marlon is also a Senior Atlantic Fellow, a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, and an inaugural Aspen Civil Society Fellow. He also sits on the Board of Directors Center for Justice Innovation,  and the Village Capital Justice Tech Advisory Board.  His TED Talk, "A Call For Criminal Justice Reform," has amassed over 1.2 million views, and you can usually find him playing the 6-bass with a steelband during the summers in his hometown of The Republic of Brooklyn, NY. He just won his fifth steelpan competition this past Labor Day at the Brooklyn Museum.

This talk will provide invaluable insight into the criminal justice system and offer strategies for reform, and advocacy. His story challenges the stereotypes of individuals involved in the criminal justice system and showcases the power of redemption. This talk will be followed by an interview with Professor Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, drawing connections between Petersons work and her book the Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Space Time and Dreams Deferred.

Beyond the Border: A Critical Dialogue Series launched in 2020. This series engages NH-based experts with counterparts from beyond the NH state borders. Experts include DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) professionals, professors, lawyers, business leaders, superintendents, filmmakers, police commissioners, a hip-hop mogul, and a financier. Participation in the series to date has been robust, with past discussions engaging from 50 to 200 participants from UNH and beyond across grade levels, disciplines, and positions.
