The impact of geese (Snow, Specklebelly, or Canada) on agricultural operations in Solano, Yolo and Sacramento counties has been increasing over recent years causing significant losses. There are currently no programs at the state or federal levels to compensate farmers for crop losses due to wildlife. The University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) is partnering with the Agricultural Commissioners of Solano, Yolo and Sacramento counties to quantify crop losses due to geese by asking farmers to share details about their losses. Estimated losses from geese will be critical information communicated to elected officials, state and federal agencies, California Farm Bureau Federation, waterfowl habitat organizations and fish and wildlife agencies.
In April 2023 we circulated a request to livestock producers to submit losses due to geese impacts on pastures. Now that winter and spring-active crops have likely been harvested we are gathering data on the impacts of geese on crops such as alfalfa, wheat, barley and hay, including hay harvested from irrigated pastures in the spring prior to stocking with livestock.
If you have experienced any crop losses this past winter (2022-2023) and spring due to geese, please take a few minutes to complete and submit answers to the questions below.
Any personal information you submit will remain confidential and only aggregated losses from all respondents for each county will be shared.
If you have questions, please contact Morgan Doran with UC Cooperative Extension at mpdoran@ucanr.edu or (530) 666-8738.
