Application Process
Please read all of this text carefully. If anything is unclear, or if you have questions, feel free to send an email to eaachapter29@gmail.com, using the Subject line: "Ray Scholarship Question."

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by May 31, 2024, and no older than 19 in order to be eligible as a recipient of this scholarship. Applicants must also have a valid FAA medical before applying; see notes about the medical below.

This form is the first step of the application process. The Chapter 29 selection committee will review all applications and identify a small number of people for an in-person/zoom interview. We will then select the scholarship winner from that group. Applications will be accepted until the scholarship winner has been chosen.

The scholarship is for up to $11,000 towards earning a Private Pilot License. The practical test, commonly called the checkride, must be completed within one year of receiving the scholarship. Besides this requirement, the winner is also expected to volunteer for at least two hours with Chapter 29 each month. Chapter 29 will assign one or more mentors from the Chapter to help the scholarship recipient navigate the learning process, stay motivated, and answer questions.

The scholarship funds can be used to cover flying club costs, flight costs, instructor fees, and testing fees. The scholarship does NOT cover the costs of getting a medical certificate or supplies like a headset, flight calculator, and similar items. The Chapter will work with the recipient to acquire a headset and necessary supplies.

The FAA medical process can take time so it is encouraged that you work to obtain an exam prior to the deadline.  The medical exam is good for 5 years which means even if you are not selected as a recipient, pending age, you may apply again for the scholarship in the years that follow. Chapter 29 representatives can provide contacts for local Aviation Medical Examiners.

Why are you interested in becoming a pilot? *
Describe your long-term interest in becoming a pilot. Please do not submit more than 500 words.  We suggest you write your response in a word document then copy and paste it here.
Are you able to commit to volunteering with 2 hours a month of time to volunteering with chapter? *
Scholarship recipients are required to volunteer 2 hours a week with the chapter in activities such as attending meetings, ground crew with young eagles events held one Saturday a month from March - October, work the Boy Scout Merit badge the first Saturday in March, helping set up/clean up at monthly meetings, SPEAK at our meetings to update members on your progress and experience, etc.
Have you applied for an FAA medical? *
Describe your activities outside of school. *
Flight training works best when student pilots schedule three lessons per week. While some lessons will be canceled because of weather or aircraft maintenance, scheduling three lessons will help ensure continuous progress is made. There is also considerable studying that must be done outside of the flight lessons to pass the knowledge test and prepare for flight lessons. To help us evaluate your ability to complete the training on a timely basis, please list sports, work, clubs, and other activities in which you participate with an estimate of how many hours any extra activities require each week.
What would be your primary means of transportation to and from the airport? *
Aircraft and flight instructors are readily available in Champaign-Urbana. Some local airports like Bloomington, Rantoul, Danville, Decatur, and Mattoon may also have aircraft and instructors available. Do you have your driver's license and regular access to a car? Will you depend upon someone else transporting you to and from the airport?
Describe your experience with Young Eagles. *
Have you had a Young Eagles flight? If yes, tell us about your experience with the Young Eagles program and how it has influenced your interest in becoming a pilot.
Explain why you believe you are the best candidate for this scholarship. *
