CITY OF RACINE'S: Firefighter/EMS Internship (Accepting Applications Soon)
The City of Racine and Racine Fire Department are excited to announce the Firefighter/EMS Internship! The purpose of the program is to allow high-school students the on-the-job experience of being a Firefighter/EMT.

You will have the opportunity to:
  • Be mentored by Racine Fire professionals
  • Ride-along on Fire and EMS emergency calls
  • Develop new technical and soft skills
  • Participate and witness on the job training as a firefighter/EMT
  • Learn the interests and values of the Racine Fire Department 
  • Work in a profession that gives back to the community
  • Develop effective listening, teamwork and communicative skills
  • Learn more about serving the City of Racine
  • Earn credit hours towards your pathway academy
  • Most importantly, determine if this career is a good fit for you!

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND SAFETY RULES:

1. Interns will report to their assigned fire station at their assigned time

2. Interns may climb ground ladders and aerial ladders under the supervision of a department member

3. Interns may wear Self Contained Breathing Apparatus(SCBA’S) as part of a training session under the direction of department members

4. Interns will be expected to participate in all Fire Department trainings/activities while “on duty." Trainings/activities may include but are not limited to: hose rolling, cleaning apparatus and stations, emergency scene clean-up, fire prevention visits, public education events and general administrative duties

5. Interns will respond with emergency crews while “on duty” to all emergency calls (ride-along). Interns will watch and observe during this time

6. Interns may not enter or preform any duties, which are within the designated “hot zone” of any emergency scene. In the event of an incident with a hot zone, the intern will stay with the driver of the apparatus they responded in until directed otherwise

7. Interns must obey and follow direction of all firefighters and officers

8. Interns will wear proper attire. Proper attire will be dark blue work pants, black closed-toe boots or shoes, and department issued intern shirt. Uniform must be clean and presentable.

9. Interns may not be substituted for current firefighters/EMTs

10. Interns shall understand that their role in this program is as an educational experience and they may be present at situations that require a high degree of confidentiality/privacy related to incident or medical information. Interns are not allowed to openly share such information with anyone outside the fire department for any reason.

Failure to maintain proper confidentiality/privacy will be means for dismissal from the program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School junior or senior
  2. Currently enrolled in a Fire Science, Health Science or EMS program, pathway or course.
  3. Grade point average 2.0 or above and maintained throughout internship
  4.  One letter of recommendation from teachers and/or counselors AND one-page essay response (see details below)
  5. Complete internship application online through the GROW Racine website (www.GROWracine.org)
  6. Complete candidate interview with members of the Fire Department, Human Resources Staff and Youth Employment Office
  7. Parent or legal guardian to authorize a background check before internship begins

Part 2: Submit 2 letters - one letter of recommendation from your teacher/counselor AND a typed, one-page essay including the following information:
1. Introduce yourself: name, school, major/pathway  
2. What are your career interests and why?
3. What do you hope to accomplish or learn from the Racine Fire Department?

SUPLEMENTAL INFORMATION 
  • PAY RATE: $15.50/HR
  • Up to 20 hours per week
  • Schedule will be specific to each student based on school/activity schedule. Official schedule will be determined once hired.
  • Weekday and some weekend hours are available

 **Applicants that are Racine residents will receive 5 points added to their interview scores. We will use and verify the address provided on this application.**
