Home Safety Survey
This is a short home safety survey that will help you determine possible hazards in and around your home. Any hazards should be fixed before they lead to problems or injuries. There are about 40 quick questions to consider.

How safe is your home?
Do you rent or own your home? If you rent, do you have the ability to service your smoke or carbon monoxide alarms or are they checked regularly for you? Please check your rental agreement. *
Can your house number be seen clearly from the street? *
Do you have smoke alarms in your home? *
How many smoke alarms do you have?  *Smoke alarms should be in each bedroom, outside every sleeping area, and on every floor in the home. *
Do you know if your smoke alarms are working? *
Do you test the smoke alarm batteries every month? *
Do you dust or vacuum your smoke alarm at least once a month? It is important to keep them clean according to manufacturer's instructions. *
Do you have any fuel burning appliances in your home? If so, you should have carbon monoxide alarms on each level of your home and near any sleeping areas. *
Do you have working carbon monoxide alarms in your home? *
Does your family have a Home Fire Escape Plan? *
Does your family practice your Home Fire Escape plan a few times every year to make sure everyone knows what to do if it is necessary to exit the home? *
Do you have an exit plan for young children or for anyone who could not get out of the home by themselves? *
Is there anyone who is disabled or over the age of 65 in your home? *
If anyone in the home is disabled or over the age of 65, have you filled out a Heads Up form with our Emergency Communications Center? If not, please call 890-3600 for assistance. *
Are all hallways, doorways, and means of exit unobstructed and clear of clutter? *
Is your home cluttered with clothes, magazines, newspapers, or other items than can burn? *
Do you have a charged fire extinguisher in the home? *
Have you been trained to use a fire extinguisher? If not, do not attempt to use one in a fire emergency. Get out and call 911. *
Do you routinely clean your clothes dryer lint filer and vent pipe to make sure they are clear? *
Do you remain in the kitchen the whole time you are cooking food on the stove? *
Are all cooking surfaces clear of things that can burn? *
Do you keep your small appliances unplugged when they are not in use? *
Is there a minimum of 3 feet between flammable items and any sources of heat or flame? *
Do you have all heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional? *
Is the thermostat on your water heater adjusted to a maximum temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid scald injuries? *
Do you use extension cords as permanent sources of power? This is never a safe option. *
Are any appliance cords or cables running under rugs or furniture? This is a potential fire and fall hazard. *
Are your rugs slip proof? Throw rugs can be a trip/fall hazard. *
Are your receptacles in good working order? Plugs should fit securely in the receptacle. *
Are your outlets overloaded? *
Are matches and lighters kept out of the reach of any children in a secure location? *
Do you use open flame or flameless candles in your home? Please consider using flameless options if you aren't already. *
Do you routinely leave lit candles unsupervised? *
Are there any smokers in the home? *
If there are smokers in your home, do they always smoke outside? *
Do you store flammable liquids inside your home? *
Do you keep medicines and dangerous chemicals in locked cabinets? *
How do you dispose of expired medicines? *
Do you store gas powered equipment in an outside shed or garage that is detached and away from the home? *
