Communications Fellowship Application - Summer 2021
Application Deadline: April 18, 2021

Please complete the following application and send your resume, a cover letter, and a portfolio of your work (with video production, podcast/radio production, opinion writing, news writing, graphic design, and/or social media posts) to communications@democracync.org with the subject header “Summer Communications Fellowship.”

Democracy North Carolina is a nonpartisan organization that turns non-voters into voters, voters into activists, and activists into leaders. We use research, organizing, communications, and advocacy to increase voter participation, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and achieve a government that is truly of, by, and for, the people. Learn more about us at democracync.org.

Democracy NC will hire 4 Communications Fellows for the Summer of 2021: 2 on a journalism track, and 2 on a multimedia track. Fellows must be able to work up to 40 hours per week plus all events held during a 10-week fellowship period, with occasional evening and weekend duties. The Communications Fellows will work together and under the supervision of communications staffers. As part of the paid internship, students will craft a work plan in order to highlight the great work our organization is doing across the state. Fellows on the journalism track will work on tactics like drafting campaign messaging for our policy agenda and election rules, writing press releases and op-eds, and interacting with reporters. Fellows on the multimedia track will craft social media campaigns, produce our existing podcast "Built By Us", and produce videos to promote our policy agenda and organizing work around the state.

Due to COVID, Democracy NC's summer programs will be digital/remote rather than asking our fellows to report to a physical office every day. All students who are accepted and complete the fellowship will receive a (taxable) stipend of $4,800.

Democracy North Carolina is an equal opportunity employer committed to equity in the workplace. Our organization considers applicants equally of race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, disability, marital status, age, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, or prior record of arrest or conviction. We seek a workplace that reflects and respects the full range of the nation and state’s diversity.
