Join artist Jen Liu, Taipei Biennial 2023 co-curator Brian Kuan Wood, and SculptureCenter Curator Jovanna Venegas for a subterranean conversation in SculptureCenter’s lower level on Liu’s work The Land at the Bottom of the Sea (2023), the last chapter of Pink Slime Caesar Shift, a multi-year body of work in a variety of mediums.

In her research-based practice, Liu fabricates speculative narratives to contest dominant accounts of the past and present. Throughout Pink Slime Caesar Shift, the artist has experimented with new technologies, such as genetic engineering and food biotech, AI and dark encryption, to create alternative networks for labor activism in South China. The Land at the Bottom of the Sea starts with the recent disappearances of multiple Chinese female activists and NGO workers. Key figures have been purged from the internet, media posts and contextual information made irretrievable. If you're bound to be liquidated – politically, socially, financially – is it possible to survive in the aftermath? Or is survival after political death a fantasy?

The Land at the Bottom of the Sea appears in SculptureCenter’s lower level as part of Small World Cinema, a presentation of moving image works from the Taipei Biennial 2023 – Small World, exhibited in New York in collaboration with Taipei Fine Arts Museum. The work shows on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and will screen 30 minutes before and immediately following the talk.
