Attendance Policy: Students in Musical Theatre Company rehearse a play together, to be performed for an audience. Rehearsing a play requires the attendance of all actors as often as possible, as it is often not productive to work through a scene without all the necessary performers, and the schedule does not often permit much time to review things that have been missed. It is therefore necessary to ask that all participants miss class only when absolutely necessary due to illness or other unavoidable circumstance. We also ask that you try to let us know in advance if there is a foreseeable conflict. All students must be available for all performances and final dress rehearsal. If a student misses more than three rehearsals throughout the course of the year, it is up to the instructor's discretion whether it is still possible for them to perform their role. They may need to give up their spot in the program and be replaced by a student on the waiting list. This will never be punitive, and the student will be allowed to return the next year, it's just not fair to the other students to allow parts of the play to be under-rehearsed, and if a student is consistently absent, it can be a huge detriment to the program for all involved. *

Casting Policy: One of the most challenging parts of theatre training is the necessary practice of casting the play. Some students will get a role they want or expect, others will get something different. It is Shakespeare by the Sea's policy to only allow the number of students into a class that there are sufficient roles for. If there are 12 speaking roles in the play, there will be a maximum of 12 students in the class. Casting is left to the discretion of the director/instructor, and they are doing the best possible job they can, taking all the students' needs and strengths into account. All available roles offer an opportunity for learning, practicing technique, and imaginative character creation. All available roles have lines to learn. We support all students in finding what is exciting and challenging about the role they are given, even if it is different from what they expect. Casting is final, and refunds will not be given if a student withdraws because they are unsatisfied with their casting. *

Snow Day/Cancellation Policy: We have had to cancel classes or rehearsals in the past for a range of reasons, including but not limited to inclement weather, power outage, and instructor illness. All classes are scheduled to include more instructional hours than are strictly covered by the tuition price. This is a decision we make because we may need to respond to different circumstances as they arise differently, depending on what's most productive for a given class at a given point in the year. Sometimes it's more useful to the students to move a class to Zoom, but sometimes it's better to cancel the class outright. The instructional hours might be made up by adding a class, inviting students to participate in a different class on the schedule, or by adding an instructor to a remaining session and dividing the group so that twice as much instruction is happening, but within the same timeframe. It is The Studio's policy to consider all these make-up options equally sufficient, and will be chosen at the instructor's discretion based on what is best and most productive for the group. *

Parent/Guardian Policy: We don't allow parents/guardians or friends/siblings to spectate during any of our lessons or classes...all in attendance must be participants. That's not to be mean, we promise! The presence of an authority figure like a parent, guardian, or other adult relation besides the teacher, or a friend or sibling, can be very distracting to a student, and makes the lesson or class unnecessarily difficult for the teacher. We will excitedly welcome audience members at our public performances in the Spring! *
