----------------------------------
*1st Round Auditions will be recorded (with video) and sent to your District Representative by the band director who registered the student. Directors will be asked to verify that the student playing in the audition is the student registered.

*Individual districts will decide how recordings will be listened to (panel meets in person, virtual, etc). Districts will have a window of January 16-January 23 to schedule the time that the judges will listen to recordings. It is strongly encouraged for panels to listen to audition recordings live. Judges will only listen to recordings one time before scoring. The same panel should adjudicate all auditions for their assigned instrument. Our hope with the window of time is to give each district the flexibility to schedule these auditions at a time(s) that best serves their schedule, judges, and circumstances.

*The deadline for directors to have all recordings from his/her school to your District Representative is 1/10/2021 by 11:59 pm. Directors will need to set their own deadline for when their students will turn in recordings to them in order to meet this deadline.

*As of now, the 2nd Round Auditions are being planned as an in-person event. We are creating backup plans if needed.

*Due to the recorded auditions, we are unable to do the traditional sight reading as in the past. Because of the need to enter a score in OPUS and for the cutoff scores needed to move to 2nd Round (which neither can be adjusted in OPUS at this point), to help Districts decide which students need to move on to the 2nd Round auditions, and for Districts who use these auditions to rank their Honor Bands, the following need to take place: In addition to the Lyrical Etude, wind players will record a designated portion from the “Technical Etude”. Timpani/Mallet will also record a designated portion from their etude. This will serve as the “Sight Reading” Score for the 1st Round Auditions in OPUS. These designated portions will be posted on the GMEA website by October 16th.

Changes in Auditions (Approved by Band Council in Spring)
*Snare Drum Rudiments for the 1st Round have been removed from the audition and have been replaced by the etude. The etude is now posted at www.gmea.org
*High School Scales will have a time limit of 3 minutes to complete. This is for High School auditions only . *If the 3 minutes is up during a scale, the student will be allowed to finish that scale for full credit.
*The time limit is for major scales only and does not include the chromatic scale.
*A committee has been formed to begin working on the details regarding platform, uploading, scoring, and helpful recording tips for students and directors. This information will be sent out statewide as soon as the committee finalizes it.
