Getting a Driver's License in the U.S.
In the United States, you may begin learning to drive at the age of fourteen. First, you must pass an exam to get a Driver's Permit. This permit allows you to drive while another licensed driver, over the age of 18, is in the car. You may continue to learn to drive in this way for two years until you turn 16. Before you can drive independently, you must pass a Driver's Education course. These courses are often available at high schools in the U.S. However, some schools do not offer the class and you must pay a service to take the course. Once you pass the Driver's Education class you will take your certificate to the Department of Motor Vehicles and pay a small fee to get your Initial License. This license is valid for 2 years. If you are a responsible driver, when you turn 18 you can get a Standard Driver's License.
