2022 SURF Fellowship Application form

Wisconsin Stem Cell Roundtable (WiSCR) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
Sponsored by the UW-Madison Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center (SCRMC)

Goal of the WiSCR SURF Program

To pair a motivated, talented UW–Madison undergraduate student, who is in the first half of their undergraduate career and is interested in pursuing research in the stem cell sciences, with a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow mentor in one of the labs in the UW SCRMC. A select number of candidates will be invited for an interview and a chance to meet with the mentors. If admitted to the program, SURF will provide a stipend to the undergraduate student to help allay living expenses in the summer. The student will be expected to work with their mentor full-time for the duration of the program (10 weeks, May 23-July 29).

Terms and Conditions

1. Eligibility. To be eligible for consideration, the applicant:

          A. must be a University of Wisconsin–Madison undergraduate student in the first or second
year of their undergraduate career at the time of application
          B. must be currently enrolled in or have completed a college-level biology course
          C. must not have previously engaged in stem cell research
          D. must attach their UW–Madison transcript to the application

2. Funding. Application to WiSCR Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program does not guarantee funding. Up to five students will be selected for funded fellowships that include a tax-deductible $6000 stipend.

3. Disclosing funding sources. Students applying for funding through the Office of the Provost are required to disclose in writing all sources of campus and other funding supporting this research, as well as all applications for funding. This should be submitted as an addendum to the funding application.

4. Multiple funding sources. Students cannot simultaneously receive funding through multiple programs for the same work. Thus, students should not apply for WiSCR Summer Undergraduate Research funding if they are already receiving funding for the work through other means, including NSF, NIH, McNair, Hilldale and departmental funds. WiSCR Summer Undergraduate Research Awards are intended to provide support where other resources are not available.

5. Credit vs. Salary. Students cannot receive both credit and salary for doing the same work.

6. 40 hour work week. In line with campus expectations, students should not exceed 40 hours of paid work per week in campus employment when classes are not in session and during the summer.

7. Symposium. Students must present their research findings at the 2022 Fall SCRMC Symposium. Details about the Fall SCRMC symposium can be found at www.stemcells.wisc.edu

8. Reporting. All mentors and student recipients must submit a final report and survey no later than 30 days after the end of the proposed support period. Failure to submit a final report and survey will impact all future funding through the WiSCR Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship.

9. Ethics Training. All students must complete an online ethics training through the Stem Cell Research Oversight website: https://kb.wisc.edu/gradsch/page.php?id=33285.

Failure to comply with the above terms may result in forfeiture of funds and future eligibility in the WiSCR SURF program.
