ESL Expectations & Agreement
An accent is a positive part of your heritage and your unique expression. But if your native accent is stronger than you would like, or if other aspects of English are getting in the way of clear, confident communicating, I can help you.

Please read through this document as the agreement is at the bottom. Please "sign" and return it to me. I look forward to working with you!

EXPECTATIONS

WHAT KIND OF ENGLISH LEARNERS DO I WORK WITH?
I work with adults. My students have learned enough English to get by, but they want to improve to either fit in or stand out. They range from students to professionals. Personally, I feel I do better with this age range versus working with children as adults tend to have more of a desire to learn.

WHAT GOT ME INTERESTED IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE?
I love the sound of a foreign language, and although I do not speak any other languages, I know the struggle of trying! It's hugely rewarding for me when a learner has that "ah-ha!" moment and eventually "graduates" because they now have the confidence to go solo.

WILL I CHANGE YOUR ACCENT?
No. Your accent is beautiful to me, and it is unique to you. If you want to speak sharper English, it will take much practice time on your part, and I will help you form the sounds that challenge you the most.

DO I WORK WITH CLIENTS LIVING IN OTHER COUNTRIES?
Yes. The Internet offers different video platforms and we can decide what works best for you when we talk the first time. In the meantime, Calendly is connected to Teams.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT TO TEACH?
I am an intuitive teacher who will guide you in any areas needing work, and absolutely we will work on whatever is most important to you!

HOW OFTEN WILL WE NEED TO MEET?
Again, this up up to you. My goal is for you to improve to the level you are happiest with. It depends on your schedule, finances, and goals/determination. I’m here to support you making good progress with your English goals for as long as it makes sense to you to work with me.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL FORMAT?
The first four hours are strictly focused on pronunciation and learning the mechanics of vocalizing sounds through poetry reading.

After that, it depends on the individual, but a typical session could include:
  • Reviewing pronunciation and other speech focal points from our last session.
  • Giving you a chance to ask any questions or mention any English fluency concerns that may have arisen since our last session.
  • Reading children's stories for dialogue and voice inflection.
  • Singing...yes...singing...(and singer I am not!)
  • Asking you to read a passage relevant to your career or that’s of interest to you, while I correct mispronunciations and mistakes and help with intonation and reading comprehension.
  • Asking you to tell me about various subjects, like your work, and having some natural back and forth conversation, while I bring to your attention and help you correct weaker areas.
  • Brief role plays of situations that you may face in your specific career or daily life, if you wish, such as job interviews, conversations with bosses or employees, talks you need to give to an audience, etc., to help you increase your fluent expression and confidence in those situations.
  • Reviewing some of the main points we worked on during the session.
  • Setting focus points and goals for exercises and practices for the days until our next session.

ZOOM/SKYPE/TEAMS, etc.
Trying to learn English with just audio is not really beneficial. But seeing how sounds are produced is! Having the amazing option of remote video conferencing increases your progress as you can mirror me.

HOW DO I GET PAID?
I use Wise, Zelle, and Venmo. Once the funds are deposited, we can move forward.

IS THERE ANY TOPIC OFF LIMITS?
Yes. I like to keep our conversations organic and flowing and professionally focused.

WHAT ABOUT REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS & RESCHEDULING?
As a teacher and business owner, my time is valuable and my ability to offer my calendar space to others is not only valuable to other students, but to me as well.

And, as I understand that life happens, I still need to be able to structure my time so that others can do the same.

Payments are made in advance and then you will schedule your classes with me personally. Once your classes are scheduled, if you are a no call/no show, you will forfeit your payment for that class.

If you need to cancel, please cancel a minimum of 60 minutes prior to class start time. This is a very generous time allotment. If you cancel prior to the 60 minutes, I will reschedule your class time at no charge. If you cancel during the 60 minutes, you will be charged 1/2 the cost of your class.

We will communicate with each other along the way (you will have my phone number to text me) to keep it as smooth as possible.

As far as refunds, If you need to stop classes for any reason, I will refund you any remaining balance.

WHAT ARE MY RATES?
I charge $45 per hour. You can buy one hour or more. No pressure.

After your payment has cleared, we will schedule our class time(s) whenever you are ready to dive in! I will need to receive your payment before the start of our classes. The best way to schedule future classes with me is via email: Margie@USAccentImprovement.com.

I, Margie Jo Vess, reserves the right to make changes to this agreement on a case-by-case basis and will update as necessary. If there are updates, you will receive the most current copy.
