"We should be willing to act as a balm for all wounds." (Etty Hillesum 13 October 1942)

This is Etty Hillesum's last sentence in her diaries written during World War II. We see her words and approach as a medicine for our collective traumas that are triggered nowadays.

As we are facing a war in Palestine/Israel, we are confronted with the questions:

How can we stay compassionate?
How can we become a balm for all wounds, without taking sides?
How can we stop the cycle of hatred and fear?
How can we help ourselves and others when we are in the midst of trauma?
How to engage in healing the collective and personal trauma?

We will come together to find spiritual resources that will help us engage with these questions.
We will use tools such as council, writing, meditation, movement and deep sharing.

Session 1: Staying Human in the times of Inhumanness

Session 2: Suffering and Grief

Session 3: The Victim/Perpetrator Cycle

Session 4: Engaging in Healing the Personal and the Collective Trauma

Who is Etty Hillesum?

Etty Hilllesum is a Jewish Dutch woman who died in Auschwitz at the age of 29. She left diaries and letters that she wrote in the last two years in her life. Her writings present a process of a young woman who searched for her inner freedom, chose to believe in the humanness of all people, even those who were so-called “enemies”, carried a vision of a better future in her heart no matter how hard life seemed on the outside.

Who are we?

We are passionate women and peace workers who work for social change and global healing. Dina, (Palestinian), is a lecturer, a dancer, a writer and a facilitator on the issues of women empowerment and women sexuality. Emma Sham-Ba, (Israeli), is a Rabbi, a poet, and an artist. Three years ago we created the Etty Hillesum Cards in the three languages English, Hebrew, and Arabic because we wanted to share the huge inspiration she gave us with others.
