May 27 | The Sport & Prey of Capitalists: How the Rich are Stealing Canada’s Public Wealth
For years we’ve been told – by business, government, and the media – that the private sector always does things better. In fact, however, Canada has a long history of creating impressive public services and enterprises. As we’ve privatized them in recent years, we’ve been left poorer as a nation and increasingly dominated by the private greed that rules the marketplace. The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly highlighted this, showing how privatization has exposed critical issues in our long-term care homes while the privatization of Connaught Labs, once the world’s leading vaccine producer, has left Canada with no vaccine production capacity. Along with the coming climate crisis, the pandemic underscores the urgent need to expand – not shrink – our public sphere.
