CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

DOROTHY GALE, Warm Mezzo-Soprano:
A young girl living with her aunt and uncle on a Kansas farm who dreams of a far-away place to escape to.  After a wild tornado places her and her dog Toto in the fantastical land of Oz, Dorothy goes on a quest to find her way home. She is brave, friendly, and polite, and ultimately learns the importance of home and family, and that things aren’t always what they seem to be.

TOTO:
Dorothy’s pet dog.  Gets into trouble for biting Miss Gulch, and then is transported with Dorothy to Oz.  The actor who plays Toto should be comfortable making loud dog barking noises.

AUNT EM, Any voice type:
Dorothy’s caretaker and motherly figure.  Aunt Em is a strong woman, but she worries about her niece getting in trouble.

UNCLE HENRY, Any voice type:
Dorothy’s uncle; he loves Dorothy but doesn’t always show it.

HICKORY/TIN MAN, Tenor/Baritone:
Hickory is one of the farm hands & a friend of Dorothy’s.  In Oz, Dorothy dreams him to be a sensitive, kind-hearted man made of tin, who longs desperately for a heart.  He joins Dorothy on her journey to see the Wizard, in the hopes of getting his wish.

HUNK/SCARECROW, Tenor/Baritone:
Hunk is one of the farm hands & a friend of Dorothy’s.  In Oz, Dorothy dreams him to be a happy-go-lucky & honest Scarecrow.  He joins Dorothy to see the Wizard, hoping to be given a brain, even though he shows some cleverness without it.

ZEKE/COWARDLY LION, Baritone:
Zeke is another of the farm hands & a friend of Dorothy’s.  In Oz, Dorothy dreams him to be a cowardly lion who is eager to gain courage from the Wizard & prove himself as “King of the Forest”.  Should have excellent comic timing.

MISS GULCH/WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST, Any voice range, but should have a witchy character voice:
The villain in both Kansas and Oz, Miss Gulch is Dorothy’s crotchety neighbor who tries to take Toto to the pound. As the Wicked Witch, she should have a terrifyingly evil cackle and must be intimidating in her fight for revenge on Dorothy, after her house falls on her sister.

PROFESSOR MARVEL/THE WIZARD, Any voice type:
An eccentric older man who Dorothy meets during the tornado.  In her dream, he becomes the Wizard of Oz, and teaches her that not everything is as it seems, and that running away will not solve any problems.

GLINDA THE GOOD WITCH, Legit soprano:
Glinda is the Good Witch of the North, who guards Munchkinland and helps Dorothy on her journey home.  She is generous, beloved by all, and must have a calming fairy-godmother-like presence.

EMERALD CITY GUARD, Any voice type, character actor:
The guard must have terrific comedic timing and be able to deliver lines confidently.  He or she should have a huge stage presence in some of the funniest scenes of the show.

MUNCHKINS (any voice type):
The munchkins are the people of Munchkinland, happy to be freed from the terror of the Wicked Witch of the East.  They should be great singers and dancers, with several featured Munchkins, such as the Mayor, the Coroner, the Barrister, the Lollipop Guild, and the Lullaby League.

WINKIES (any voice type):
The slaves of the Wicked Witch of the West, who are desperate to be freed from her.  They should be great singers and dancers.

FLYING MONKEYS (any voice type):
The Wicked Witch of the West’s bodyguards & henchmen.  They attack Dorothy & the gang on their journey.  These actors should be comfortable making monkey noises.

OZIANS (any voice type):
The happy, jolly people who live in the Emerald City; they help make Dorothy & the gang all spiffed-up to see the Wizard.  They should be great singers and dancers.

POPPIES & JITTERBUGS (any voice type):
Featured dancers who act as obstacles on Dorothy’s journey to the Emerald City.  The poppies should be graceful & ballet-like in their movement, whereas the Jitterbugs should be bouncy and fast-paced.
